Hey all,

I have this problem with my shifters feeling slippery when it starts to rain. It makes it trickier to brake properly and confidently when they are wet.

Have any of you experimented with pasting a small strip of non-slip material on there?

I have not tried anything of the sort. Seems like a great idea. Try it out, take some pics & post up your review of how it works out.

Scott made grip stickers for mtb levers back in the 80's. I saw them on ebay not too long ago. The guy had a bunch for like 6.99 although I dont remember the actual product name.


I also thought of buying a sheet of skateboard grip tape, (Sandpaper in sticker form) and cutting out patterns for my mtb levers, Im sure you could do the same for road levers. I think that the tape could make a cool chainstay protector as well.

Interesting, I haven't thought about this for a while.

- Super Record levers, back in the 80s, had holes drilled in them to give better grip in the rain compared to Nuovo Record levers. The SR levers actually weighed more since Campy thickened the material so they were strong enough. Even a touch with a drill bit, not penetrating the material, would help with traction.
- I wonder if Plasti-Dip, meant for tool handles, would work okay. It's a rubbery-plastic dip, thick paint if you will, for the handles on pliers and such.
- Along the same lines I wonder if liquid electrical tape would work also. It's meant to protect wiring in tough-to-reach places - I use it when soldering batteries into place.
- And along those lines I wonder if heat shrink tubing would work. That's also for electrical work, to protect connectors and the wires leading to them. It's rubbery and thin.
- Finally I know that many grippers on clothing use silicone dots or stripes. I wonder if something similar on brake levers - I'm imagining something that resembles decorative dots on a cake - would help with grip.

Most of those can be undone or redone easily.

I have seen what looks like grip tape on shifters on cross bikes.

Try it. If you hate it you can remove it.. If you cut rounded corners on the pieces of tape it'll be less likely to peel up.

I would not use sandpaper-like grip tape for something that my skin is supposed to grip. I don't care about the soles of my shoes wearing down when doing kickflips (even though I can't kickflip nor even ollie at all ) but I can't imagine how thick the callouses would have to be on my fingers. The plasti-dip sounds like a good idea, though.

Im beginning to think that the grip tape would either destroy your gloves or skin over time. I think the plasti-dip is a decent idea but potentially very messy and difficult to apply.

Just get better gloves.

Thin strip of atheletic tape wrapping around the levers worked for me. Over times, they will turn black though.

If you rub the grip tape against another piece of grip tape (grit touching grit), it'll be kinder to your skin (and still provide more traction than the bare lever/shifter).
