Got caught in a thunderstorm with no place to hide. Had just did three miles and had another three to shelter. I was so scared I thought that if I am going to die, I am going to do it going hard. Set my own KOM that day getting the hell out of there. Was so drenched and relieved when I got under a bridge to hide, all I could do was laugh.

back wheel came loose jammed the stay at 35 or 40mph.. during a sprint... bought me a trip to hospital... wear a helmet.. glad i did.

I live in a nice suburb and I once left my house for a 25 mile ride in nice weather without spandex, clipless, 2 lights, medical id, or 4 bottles of water.

I went off the side of a road at 48mph, and was found by a motorist about 40 minutes late, face down and unconscious.
It wasn't really scary for me(I don't remember much before the helicopter ride) but the people that found me thought I was dead.

I've had my fair share of group ride/race crashes, but those really aren't scary per se because you hardly have time to react, you're just suddenly tumbling and hoping your body and bike frame don't break. I think the scariest things are the close calls with trucks or angry motorists. I had a pickup blare what must have been an aftermarket train horn about 2 feet off my hip, it scared me so much I swerved off the road into a ditch that was about a 1 ft drop into loose dirt. Somehow I didn't crash, but I'm sure the dickbag driver was laughing as he sped off in a cloud of diesel smoke.

Waiting for the start at every mass start road race, horrible possible outcomes running through my head, wondering why I still do this. Of course, the best part of cycling is finishing said races unkilled.

I had to outrun a tornado once. Made it. Another time I was on our Tuesday fast group ride and a storm hit up pretty hard. 30 mph winds, rain, lightning. There were 7 or 8 of left in the lead group and were traveling east. The storm came from the south. Rain was sideways and after my pull at the front, I peeled off and saw a small horse shelter off the side of the road. I pulled over and as I got to the barbed wire fence, lightning struck pretty close to me. At the same time, I got the crap shocked out of me. Thought I was dead. Turned out an electric wire was caught under my brake hoods and was shocking me. Close one. I still laugh about it.

In the same vein; I long ago learned not to share the very few scary moments with my wife. I can imagine she worries about me enough as I Iog many hours on the road.
