@Padgett

Well it's obviously a bit rough, no matter, a Fat Chance is a grail bike regardless, great find. Looks like the fork might not be original, again no matter and may be.

The outer ring was ground down to be a bash guard, fairly common. Looks like the frame is unmolested which is surprising given the rest of the hacks we see here.

Be careful with the brake levers and hoods, they look like Magura's and if so are likely original, cool, old and somewhat rare, especially with hoods.

You one lucky man, nice score.

Also, given the state, I would get the PB Blaster in the stem, seatpost and BB to free up anything that is sticky or stuck including the lever screws sparingly, being slotted they are usually kind of beat up and if stuck end up more so.

Pics as requested. I have the bike taken apart for now. My only obstacles are a frozen seat post and the threads are slightly mangled on the left pedal. Going to my LBS tomorrow to get those chased with their tap.

Included the american flag pic as I think its cool. At first I thought the levers needed to go but after seeing they are original and mentioned in the 1985 Fat Chance catalog, ill be keeping them. Also, thoughts on the seat?

That's awesome, Tx. Seat is toast, you may be able to find another or a repop, it may have been original. Like I said those levers are the real deal especially with the hoods, they are motorcycle levers that were used before bike specific ones came out. Also get the PB in the seatpost and be patient. Did the BB come out ok?

FYI you can make your own pedal chaser by cutting or filing sharp slots in a stripped down pedal spindle, like this. Mount it in a vise and do one step forward, two steps back with anti-seize.

@Padgett,

Here's a pic from Chris Chance's Bio on the Fat Chance website, you may have a very serious grail bike as it's just like this one.

You should reach out to him with the s/n and see what he says.

Yours has the same parts that are left on it, looks like the fork is original.

This will be important to leave original despite being rough it should clean up well.

This just turned into one h**l of a find.

@merziac thank you for the help! I am excited about the bike. I will reach out to him and see what he says. Do y'all think that I should start a thread for this bike specifically? I do not want to clutter this thread up too much.

Great find, a very nice bike!
That saddle was popular with MTB riders in the eighties. The ground off big chainring is a fine period piece, a home-made bash guard to protect the smaller chainring from roots and rocks. The stem appears to me to be made by Salsa.
Enjoy.

That's a nice one. Ours shared the same frame. The Comp model had a higher end tubeset AFAIK.

I swapped out my front cantilevers for V brakes, and now run the same pads front and rear. The ride is very nostalgic for me, I am very happy to have it back.

My 1988 Yeti FRO. I've owned this since I was a 20 years old kid. I worked in a shop so I called them every few days asking when it would be finished and shipped to me. Linda Parker and I becan quite good friends on the phone.... I raced it coast to coast in the U.S. and Mexico. I tortured this thing and it just kept taking whatever I would dish out. I will be buried with this bike!

1988 sm500

I know I haven't gotten around to removing the reflectors; they will be gone soon.

Thinking of tuning this up and selling it; using the proceeds for a new hardtail soon hopefully!

New handle bars and housing on my 96 Trek 930. It helps with the look around while I am dodging cars during my deliveries.

I really did not want another bike but I just couldn't pass this up, I don't think there are to many of these around. Redline to me is more BMX and this has a bit of that feel. From the components it looks to be mid 80's. oh ya if you can't see it, it's a Redline conquest and in small print it says ESCAPE VEHICLE.

This Orient Express was a consolation prize when I missed the roll away tool chest at a local sale. Nice to find one that was stored indoors.
