1981 Raleigh Record Ace

I picked up this 1981 Raleigh Record Ace (Reynolds 531, suntour drop outs, worksop built) earlier this year and started working on it. I sprayed frame saver inside the frame, overhauled the hubs and headset, and installed a new bottom bracket and crank. This bike was sold only for a few years in the early 80s and in the UK only. My bike still has the sticker from the shop in the UK that originally sold it. The wheels (maillard red label laced to rims with a raleigh sticker), brakes (weinmann 605), and headset are original. I've replaced the bar and stem with a nitto randonneur bar and stem, the swaged SR crank with a shimano 600 triple, and the saddle with a brooks narrow B17. The derailleurs (suntour cyclone front and rear and suntour ratcheting) came on the bike when I bought it. I believe the bike originally came with campy gran sport derailleurs. I really like the pinstriping on the bike. I picked this up from bwilli88 earlier this year who did a very nice job of packing and shipping the bike.

Some front end tweaks to the Shogun. After a number of rail trail rides since I picked it up from Tom K. I determined that I wanted a longer stem and I’ve had a 110 Cinelli lying around since I pulled it off my Mercian in 2007. Of course, once that was in flight I had to fiddle some more! I got a set of 50cm Rando bars from the Velo Orange sale, replaced the Weinmann levers with a nice pair of drilled 600s that were languishing in the bin, and added a VO decaleur and front rack so I could use a Cannondale bag I’d previously set up for that mount. Oh, and a bell. Being a tall frame, I still have to close about an inch of space between the rack and the bag bottom. Last time I used this setup I zip tied a black plastic VHS clamshell to the top of the rack. It had the right strength-to-weight ratio and could even be used for storage! But I seem to have less space this time so I’ll see what’s lying around.

I picked up this ratty 1985 Bianchi Trofeo two nights ago with mixed plans for it. One thought was to strip off the parts to use on a nicely refurbished Peugeot I got my hands on for cheap. The parts on this Bianchi are superior in my opinion to what's on the Peugeot. Had the Bianchi up on the stand last night giving it a clean and degrease. Then I started hitting it with rubbing compound and polish to see if the paint can be brought back to life. It's starting to look too nice now to strip for parts but dang it, I also think it's too small for me to ride

Anyway, some pics from right after I washed it last night. Need to find some hopefully matching touch up paint if I decide not to part it out.

Pretty much all the original parts minus the saddle and pedals

Paint has wear but I started working it after these pictures and the color and shine are coming back.

Suntour Superbe, good stuff!

Nothing shabby about this crank either.

More Suntour goodness.

And after only 8 months a mid 80's De Rosa takes shape. Last week a long cage Campy Mirage came out of the bin at Bike Works and managed to float towards the ghost bike. I admit I don't like the black. but at least it's Campy and long cage works with the 13-32 freewheel.

The wheels are Mavic Open 4CD on Mavic hubs.

I finally got to take advantage of some free time to apply several coats of clear varnish to the Eisentraut. (I lost track — maybe 15-20 diluted coats?) Now to let it bake a little bit, then to build. Slowly but surely.

I'm putting together an old Cannondale ST600 for a 350-mile supported tour that starts this Wednesday.

I had trouble getting the shifter cable to line up properly with the cable stop in the seat stay... I tried a plastic shifter nipple as usual (there's one circled in orange in the picture) but it wouldn't seat properly in the cable stop. The shifting worked more or less OK, but there was a lot of friction.

When I looked carefully through all the bits supplied with the "Dura Ace" 9speed Shimano bar-end shifters I got in the mail yesterday, they actually had an aluminum nipple included for just this purpose. The remarkable thing is it still didn't fit, but I opened the hole in the stop a bit with a 5/32 drill bit, and viola. See pictures below. I'd never seen a setup like that before.

Also, an unrelated question: The manual says how these shifters work "only with Dura Ace rear derailleurs" -- either 8speed or 9speed. For one thing, the spacing is different between 8 and 9, and for another, I think it was eons ago that DA used different spacing than the rest of the lineup. I'd be interested if anyone can offer insights. Anyway, it shifts alright now, so I'm good with it.

cheers -mathias

Well not exactly wrenching, but building a second level platform to put into a U-Box. I had to build this in order to fit and send most of my daughters household furniture for her to use while attending MED School at U. MASS ......This was much easier when I was younger.
Luckily, all of it fit and arrived safely......and now bracing for MASSive debit.

2 levels...I should have made a YouTube video on how to pack this thing, along with the build!

Best, Ben

So close to finishing the super sport that I have been working on for the past month or so. Amazon delivered 1 roll of bar tape on Friday. The next roll is coming Tuesday… what the heck?

My rear tire literally exploded right before I took this picture. Scared the living daylights out of me!

Super Le Tour

I recently picked up an old Super Le Tour from the orig. Owner, I know this is not an expensive or extravagant bike at all but I absolutely love it, I have vintage treks, miyatas cannondales, many Schwinns including paramounts but after riding this SLT on what was supposed to be a short test (didn't want to stop, put about 8-10 miles on it on the test ride )ride after the tires actually held air when pumped up for the first time in 30 years, I can't believe how comfy this bike is, so I have been slowly cleanin it up and re-greasin bearings and stuff, it's cleanin up real nice, will post some pics as soon as I can get 10 posts up ! Not a newbie here just can't seem to get into my old account

Immediately after mounting the rack and bag above on my Shogun, a lovely VO combo caught my attention. Put them on today for a quick trail ride with @noglider and am planning to put the others on Mrs. ascherer’s Motobecane.

A bit off topic but I bought some tannoy stage p.a. cabinets because they have dual concentric drivers that tannoy is known for. For stage use they don't make real deep bass but I had some circa 1960 Heathkit cabinets made for a 15" driver that should help us get a little lower resonant frequency. So far these are pretty amazing. Only have one listenable but I'm sold!

It came from this cabinet

1960 here we come

Ready to rumble.

Russell , That looks awesome, I wish I could hear it.I hope you are able to salvage the cloth or get some like it. My brother and his sons are the musicians in my family. I used to go to his shop where he rebuilt speakers(high end or studio) with new voice coils and everything. He would test them with an old Crown tube amp , a model 500 I think, and when that thing was warmed up .....Man O Man!! One of his sons is the drummer for Trace Atkins(not sure of spelling) . My brother had a microphone collection and some old Fender guitars that his sons now have . My brother still does some sound work outside of Nashville, I think. I grew up going to bars and stuff helping him set up his "kit" and listening to live music , which is why I LOVE music so much. Rock on ......

The grill cloth is pretty shot but if I get these right I will replace with quality vintage style cloth.
