sure, but you are using logic. Plenty of illogical people out there. I could see a little old lady thinking, I’ll just give that nice young man a toot of my horn to let him know I’m passing, or have dementia, or let them know I love mens butts in spandex

I've had people give "friendly" honks while I'm riding ahead of them and get totally mystified why I wasn't happy about it. I just don't think people get how conditioned we are to interpret the honk as indicating trouble of one kind or another. Also, it's way louder to a cyclist than it is to a driver inside of another car, so way more startling at close range.

great suggestion on affordable mirrors. lately i have been thinking to get serious about this. when you get yours, we would like to know how your experience with this is.

I guess those work for you. They seem mounted so close to the stem that your body will block your view. I have bar end mirrors on the left side of my bikes except the one with bar end shifters.

I feel putting them at the end of the handlebars is awkward.

They mount securely (expanding nut) and the hinge can be adjusted---they stay in place while riding and I can flip them inward when I park. Also, they extend out about an inch further than other bar-end mirrors I have tried, so I can see past my leg and still see behind me.

I live in a location where honking the horn is actually written into the law regarding overtaking/passing - it is literally the 1st thing you are mandated to do by law even before using the turn signal.
Fortunately almost no one pays it any attention.
What a time to be alive!
Fun fact - the driver doing the passing has the right-of-way and the vehicle getting passed is obligated to slow down and do whatever else is required for the passing driver to complete their pass.
We have stupid laws here.

Have you actually seen this law? I'm skeptical. Here's the Prince Edward Island Drivers Manual, and it says don't honk when passing a cyclist:

So what if that's true? That's a personal preference kind of thing. He's got the wide angle mirrors on, so depending on his position on the bike, under the arms might not be much of a problem.

I have handlebar mirrors mounted on all my road bikes for the very reasons you state. Especiallyon my training rides when automobile traffic is a concern, I feel very uncomfortable without some kind of rear visibility assistance. If the choice is between riding on the "wrong" side with a dedicated bike lane or wide shoulder for safety versus riding on the "right" side with no or very little margin for safety, I think he is making the smart decision. But that's just me.

I use this Sunlite cruiser mirror on my swept bar. The mount it comes with is a piece of garbage; mild steel with sharp edges, so I found a handlebar-mounted reflector clamp, and it works great.
