What bottom bracket tool do I need?

What bottom bracket tool do I need?
I haven’t encountered this tool for a bottom bracket cup before. I tried Parks BBT-22 removal tool and it’s too big. The notches in the bottom bracket cup are more rounded compared to the Park tool as well. The only thing I’ve seen that looks remotely similar would be a Phil Wood removal tool… is this a Phil Wood bottom bracket? It’s a mystery bike from my local bike co-op that came with some very nice parts including a Campy Record pista crank.

Could be a Phil bottom bracket, but Phil mounting rings do fit other cartridges, e.g. SunTour, Edco, etc., which is handy when you want to install a cartridge in a frame with odd BB threads (e.g. French, Swiss, Raleigh, Chater-Lea).

I believe it does take a Phil Wood tool. The cups you show, and the PW tool, have 18 splines. The Shimano tool has 20 so that is certainly the wrong one. Several on-line shops list the PW tool at less than $20 so it's probably worth trying it.

I removed it a couple of days ago and it was indeed Phil Wood. The bearings are trashed, but otherwise couldn’t be happier with the pleasant surprise. Thank you to the community for the help , just wanted to make sure the cups were what I thought they were before I spent 40 bucks for two tools.

The bearings can be replaced. You can either do it yourself by pushing them out of the cartridge shell and replacing them with fresh bearings from an industrial bearing supplier, or have Phil do it for you: service@philwood.com
