Freewheel/cassette completely separated from the wheel, bearings and lock ring fell o
Hi, looking for any ideas on what this might be as it's a new bike and I had similar issues, so I might want to learn to do this maintenance or get it serviced under warranty....
Just about 5 months ago I bought a new Trek Fx1 Disc bike.
It did well on about 500 miles so far except yesterday when I suddenly heard/felt the rear wheel/freewheel wobbling really bad while I was cycling.
I immediately stopped off the bike and removed the rear wheel from the frame and the ball bearings fell out along with the lock ring seal that contained them inside...
Is this something that's broken on the bike (and worth claiming warranty) or just needs some fixing?

Not sure about the new hubs but the old freehubs were held on with a thin wall hollow bolt. If that bolt broke still would not let all the bearing balls in the freehub fall out though. But it would cause the wheel and cogset to wobble around really massively.

This is a new, five month old Trek FX1? First thing you need to do is take it back to the dealer that you bought it from and at least find out what they say about it. Might be there is something the shop will feel is theirs to correct.

Picture assist.
You have a freewheel. The axle is broken. It is clearly a warranty problem but it is likely to occur again. You might want to replace the wheel with a freehub wheel. It’s stronger and less prone to axle breakage…like zero.

To the OP: Yes, you have a freewheel and I agree the axle is broken. See your dealer for a warranty claim and see if they will exchange the rear wheel for a cassette freehub version.

Video assist. You circled the axle in your pictures. That suggested that it was the axle end that came out. On looking at the video, its the lockring on the freewheel that loosened and came out. It’s still a warranty issue.
That said, a freehub wheel is still a better option.
