Vintage 1983/84 Ross Mt. Rainer
I just picked up this vintage Ross Mt. Rainier in all original condition. The Shimano derailleur is a RD-AL11 which was released in June 1984, however the serial number on the bike is R3J1159, which makes me think it has a 1983 frame. Also the classic Ross advertisements from 1983 show the Mt. Rainier in the red color. Strange to me that the Mt. Rainier was a mid level bike, but had bolt on wheels.
Either way it's a great vintage bike and will be fun to take it old school out on the trail. I can't wait to give it a total refurbishment.

A lot of early MTBs had bolt on wheels. It's strange to see that version of lawyer lips on the front..
It's interesting that they transitioned to Shimano derailleurs that early. I always assumed the low-end Shimano with hanger on my (probably) Force One was non-original, but maybe it was. I ended up replacing it and the garbage FD with NOS Suntour AG Tech.
I think mine also has Ishiwata 024 tubing, and I like it quite a bit.

1999 Trek 9900 OCLV Pro Issue frame with Manitou Ti-SX fork, recently converted to 32x19 singlespeed. It's currently getting about half of my ride days every week. It's a blast!!

I just picked up this vintage Ross Mt. Rainier in all original condition. This was kind of a concept project: a cheap-lugged Wheeler mountain bike frame (cheap because of a couple of dents in the top tube), a cheap 1x11 drivetrain from an eBay seller in China (a hair under $200 shipped for crankset, BB, rear cluster, chain, RD, shifter, cables, and housing), Shimano v-brakes, cheap levers, cheap wheelset from Velomine. Maxxis tires are clearly the priciest item. Had it out for a test run and these pics. A bit of a beast in terms of weight, but feels smooth and will likely roll over everything. Might be my winter commuter.

I replaced the grips, tires, the derailleurs (originally a non-functioning front and a low-end Shimano rear) with Suntour AG and (later) the seatpost. The seatpost on it in this picture is aluminum, 27.0 mm, and as I found it. I added the upper clamp, which was missing. Brooks is, obviously, not original.
The front wheel is obviously much later, but nice, and as found. The rear is some Kinlin rim with a low-end hub, also as found. No gold anodization anywhere. Perhaps the originals were stolen?
I had one of the rear canti bosses pop off in my hand and was able to buy a screw-in stud, grind down an appropriate nylock nut and use some washers to save the frame a few years back.

Oh wow. A piece of mountain bike history. Yeah, that’s cool. I dig it. People love the bull moose handlebars, by the way. These bikes are built like a tank and yet ride so nice. They make great city bikes too.
Are those the original bear trap pedals? My bike has them and they spin fine (and really look the business). However, one of them is missing the plastic dust cap. Will have to see if maybe I can find an acorn shaped nut that would fit.

Ross Mt. Rainier with chrome fork
sold my Hood last year. - My interpretation of the Rainier was that Ross used the Mt. Whitney frame (see gusset at headtube and down-tube). Then used other components and color to differentiate for more models/choices. Mine came from the original owner and had the beautiful chromed Tange fork.

Almost finished up with this 1995 Proflex 855 ridden for a race team called Team Rhino. Still need some wheel work and a few clean up details.
