Shimano FD faceoff, DA 5500 vs. 105 7700

The Dura Ace 7700 is the dirty one, the clean one is a 105 5500.
Although I haven't compared them on a bike, they sure look pretty dang similar!
Only difference I can see is the weight, with the DA coming in at 68g, compared to 75g for the 105.
Add 34g for a clamp.

Well, they’re similar, sure. They’re also very “form follows function” components from the same manufacturer. It’s no wonder they have a family resemblance. But weight isn’t the only difference— the Dura Ace is stiffer, resulting in better shifting.

You can see the slot machined into the back of the Dura Ace piece. That's where that 7g went!

Yes, I figured that, even though it's hard to tell just by hand-operating the derailleur.
Can't wait to assemble a bike with Dura Ace, as I've never had any experience with it.

“you’ll never go back.”

I heard that somewhere.

Is that a current project you’re working on?

Well...kind of!

Story is, I ran into some 7400 DA stuff at a swap (front wheel, brifters, RD, FD), at prices I couldn't pass up.
Naively, I figured I'd rustle up the rest of the group, and find a nice frame to stick it all on.

I soon found out how crazy-high the pricing is on 30 year old Dura Ace stuff!

Anyway, I'm making some headway, but am still looking for a double crankset, a headset, and hoods.

Dura Ace 7400 is premium stuff. Sort of like Campagnolo Super Record and 8 speed items.

Well, the 7400 was gorgeous stuff, the parts that got me into cycling. The grey anodizing was so attractive. Don’t forget to go all the way and get the Dura Ace stem and seatpost. Seatpost is available in fluted and aero; the stem is arguably the sexiest quill stem ever produced.
