It seems whenever I'm really stressed, I make lowball offers to susceptible cool bikes on the local sites. My problem tavern on the block had a couple fights, a car crash, and a shooting that may or may not have been related.

So, this morning I took a trip up to Seattle to buy this '84 Gitane TdF, Vitus 983/981 fork. A bit crunchy and was missing a few parts when bought, but I'm a sucker for old school internal routed rear brakes. I put some nice wheels and a tall stem on it for a test ride. I like it, it's a little flexy but that's what I like.

I have a friend who's looking for a bike. I found this Raleigh Super Tourer on craigslist for a great price the other day and picked it up last night after work. The paint's rough and the seatpost suffered a bit from rough edges inside the seat tube, but it's structurally solid. It had been a commuter bike for a previous owner and will continue as such. It had VO swept-back bars, so I threw on this set of drops and Dia-Compe aero levers I had at my friend's request. Didn't do too much else to it other than make sure everything was working properly and nothing was seized. The headset is near the end of its life but should last until the end of summer. I'm getting some nasty vibrations while braking in the rear which goes straight through to the seat — quite unpleasant. I think I need to clean off the rim and play with the toe-in.

Gonna get new tires tomorrow and deliver it this weekend. My friend is also interested in learning how to do all the work themselves, so as things need upgrading or replacing, we'll go over them together.

Just finished up this Linus Dutchi 3i that was headed for the landfill. Everything was basically sound on it. Replaced the worn-out seat and hand grips, replaced the old tires, cleaned and oiled the chain, replaced a broken spoke on the rear wheel and spent a day buffing out the paint. Then added a Velo Orange front rack I picked up on Craigs List and replaced the broken kick stand. The Shimano three speed hub is smooth but very low--ideal for a slow-moving "Oma fiets" (Dutch for Grandma bike.) Good to have it back on the road again.

Lots of miles on this bad boy, the Craftsman. I have had this since 1993, it was a hand me down from the neighbor. As near as I can tell it is about 1977. Since I got this I've gone through two electric and a another Craftsman (2005) and three weed eaters.

Last week the rolling pin blew out and there was no going back, heck with gettting a new pushers, the last Craftsman lasted only a couple of years. So, I went to Ace Hardware and bought some tubbing cut it down to size, and Bob's your uncle! Here she is in all it's patina glory.

I'm terrible with progress photos, but I thought I'd share here. Thanks to @rccardr for the rim, this is my first full wheel build since I was in college. Everything went smoothly, and now I have a pretty nice vintage front wheel to put on a yet to be found project bike! :-)

Another bike diverted from the landfill, ready for a new rider. A Shogun 400 with all Shimano components. Swapped out a high-rise bar and re-used these Linus bars left over from another build.


Love a good mixte frame.

The bike as I got it--the riser handlebars were a poor choice for this frame.

I found a set of 5 speed wheels and have decided to use them on the '64 Specialissimia. I've run into a couple of snags, one of which is a crack forming on the rear caliper at the transition bend toward the pad, dang. I get that fixed find my cable clamps and some tires Ill be testing this weekend.

Thank you! I was taught a long time ago to take the extra time/attention to be able to read the logo from the stem hole, but what I am more amazed with is the fact that my phone's camera is this good (run of the mill Samsung S10). I didn't take more than a couple seconds to set up the shot, and it came out perfect! :-)

One of my budget vintage projects. The 67 Robin Hood Lenton Sports. Brakes were updated from the Raleigh style steel side pulls to Dia Comps and Weimann levers replacing the steel originals. Rear wheel changed out to guick release alloy with front wheel swap in progress. Original chrome fenders reinstalled but need some adjusting. I fabricated an ell bracket for the seat stay fender mount but it pushes the fender down too much. I'll fab up a mount that crimps around the fender and get it higher up.

I did a drop bar conversion on a '92 Stumpjumper last year. I took it out for a 16 mile ride today, part gravel and part paved, and there was a creak coming from the bottom bracket area. Looks like rain this weekend so I'll have plenty of time to sort this out. Plus I want to install a Blackburn mtb rack.

Today I finally got around to gluing up the old Reynolds wheels for the 90's Klein Quantum II. I'll tape tubulars on inside but I won't do glue inside, too messy. Had time this afternoon and the temps were warm so I got it knocked it finally.

The old beast is weighing 16 lbs 13 ozs now. Real curious to see if this makes it ride even nicer.

Finished the party boots upgrade for my Holdsworth: Mavic Monthlery Route tubulars
Was: Ofmega hubs + zinc spokes + Tufo S33 Pro 24mm (25mm installed) + Shimano 6 speed (14-28) freewheel.
Now: Campy hubs + DT stainless spokes + Vittoria Rubino Pro 28mm (27.5mm installed) + SunRace 7 speed (13-28) freewheel

Here is the 1971 Dawes Galaxy I just fiinished for the Silicon Valley Bicycle exchange. It has been thoroughly reconditioned and upgraded and will be for sale to help finance our non profit.

We are on track to donate 1000 bikes back into the community this year . Yeah!!!

Restoration

Strip frame of hardware

Check frame alignment and adjust

Cold set rear dropouts to 126 mm.

Clean, treat rust, t/u paint and clear coat frame

Replace fork with NOS Tange chrome unit with forged ends

Install new chrome head set and bearings

Replace Cottered steel crank with Forged one piece aluminum square taper crank with 38,52 tooth aluminum rings, new bottom bracket cups, bearings, and spindle.

Replace original 27” steel wheels with aluminum and new 27 x 1” Pasella gum wall tires

Replace original 5 speed freewheel with Shimano hyper glide 6 speed

Replace original Simplex derailleurs with Suntour AR x Gt (long cage) rear and Suntour 7 front.

Replace Original damaged Brooks saddle with new touring saddle

Replace brake blocks with new Kool Stop units with replaceable rubbers

Clean and polish all original hardware.

All new cables and covers

Lube all bearings

Adjust.

I always try and get my winter projects through before spring finally shows up here in mid to late April so that I can just ride. A chance encounter with the "Are you looking for one of these?" thread led me to this nearly original Raleigh Competition (estimated 1975 given the parts spec - I haven't checked the number on the bottom yet). An unusual event for me - new bike day! The previous owner claims all the bearing surfaces have been maintained, but I doubt it given that the Atom pedal bearings were dry when I opened one up. Seat post and stem moved easily. The Normandy Luxe hubs spin smoothly, so I want to service those hubs before riding the bicycle more than a few blocks. I've just started to tinker with it. I don't have any experience with tubulars - the tires on this one are dry cracked, though are holding high pressure. They are mismatched and appear quite old. I'm undecided whether I want to buy new tubulars and learn the gluing process, or take the Luxe hubs and build a new wheelset with a nice pair of era appropriate clincher rims. What do you think? I find that some of the most enjoyable moments of the C&V bicycle hobby are when learning new methods/technologies. This could be one of those moments! The OEM wheelset is Nisi alloy rims with Normandy Luxe Competition hubs.

Just freshened up this '98 TREK 800 for a co-worker, he bought it new. It wasn't in terrible condition just needed some TLC. Still had the original knobbies in excellent condition but he wanted something smoother riding. Replaced the tires and tubes, complete NOS brake set, chain, shifters, grips and cables.The original brakes had all 4 plastic collars broken. I wanted to upgrade it to Tektros or something without the plastic collars but he said stock was good enough. And I cleaned, cleaned, cleaned and then cleaned some more.

I also enjoy shooting traditional, though it has been too long. Mine are recurves; never shot a longbow.

This just arrived for a once over and a repair, a neighbor's GT Slipstream that came from my old alma mater, Two Wheel Travel. Initials have faded from the shop sticker so we don't know who assembled it but everything looks good except for the left crankarm. Wheels are straight, brakes feel good and there's even air in the tires.


I may have a crankarm that will work. Nice little bike.

Not myself, but CycleFab's Colin helped move the seat stay bridge few mms up to fit a wider tire and added bosses around since will get a fresh powder coat anyway.

Past two days:
Spesh Diverge and an S Works Epic...degrease, deep clean and tuneup...they were in pretty rough shape...owner likes to lube and lube and lube then ride on dusty, sandy roads/trails.
Univega something or other.
Oh got to work on a very nice Spesh Roubaix...new tires, computer and check over...just got back from the 5 boros ride and the bike got jostled around a bit...just a few minor adjustments. The owner takes pretty good care of it.
Several "cheap" bikes in for spring tuneups, etc., pretty standard fair for the average local shop.

I've had the longbow since 1999, but this past month is the first time I really think I've shot it well. I owe it to my newfound shooting buddy, who has really helped break down my technique, adjust my arrows, and give me all manner of unsolicited advice. He has a couple Asian-style recurves, shoots from the thumb, does Kyudo and all that. Thank goodness for these enthusiasts who share their skills!
