Pro tip: don't put 7-Up on your rotors
I have a front basket, and I went to the local market just for a 6 pack of 7-up. One of the cans had a leak and it leaked on the front rotor and now I have a baked on layer of 7-up all over the rotor. The brakes still worked but squeaked loudly.
I've been cleaning it for over an hour with steel wool and acetone - it's really hard gunk. Not sure if the pads can be salvaged.
If I had gotten vodka instead of 7-up I wouldn't be in this mess.

What would you use if you spilled pop on the kitchen table?
Probably something VERY inexpensive.
I've pierced pop cans when carrying loose in my rear baskets. The slightest burr on the basket easily cuts a thin pop can.

No longer sugar. Closer to caramel. Still somewhat water soluble but the caramel is in the pad material, not on the rotors. Much more difficult to get out. Just get new pads.

When they went 2x6, it was a godsend. I can put 2 (on end) in each basket and 2 more on the rack between them.
A few bungie cords to keep them from flopping around and that's enough weight for a 74 year old.

Pads may not need to be replaced. Take them out of the calipers and sand them down to virgin material on a flat surface.

Clean the rotors with warm water, and then maybe an isopropanol wipe (or isopropanol on a paper towel that doesn't shed).
Sand the pads down. If it still squeals like a stuck pig, (a) replace the pads, or (b) replace the SRAM brakes with Shimano.

The brake system seems to be re-breaking-in as expected. Nevertheless I've ordered new pads. After I install the new pads, I'll sand down /clean the old ones as recommended and keep them as spares.
