It would be interesting to see the article on the golden age of the bicycle on p. 34.
I really enjoyed the piece on the Wisconsin 300. Wisconsin has fine riding. I like the bit where they decided not to stop on the hippie commune,
. Plus there was only one women and one 61 year old who finished. That would be very different today. There would be many more females and many more older riders as well.
I'm trying to imagine what kind of bikes people rode on rides like that in 1971. I'll bet most folks were convinced that European bikes were the best. Japanese bikes may not have been that common in '71. Fuji was the first major Japanese importer and they were just starting out in the early 70s. Schwinn would be about the only American manufacturer plus a few custom bikes. I'll bet a lot of people used tubulars on that ride, rode leather saddles, triples were likely uncommon (TA and stronglight were both in production then), and gearing was a bit tough with 2 x 5 gearing. I'll bet that there were more than a few bikes with cottered cranks on that ride. Almost like C&V BF today,

Amazing, those racers pictured would now be in their mid to late 70's. I wonder what happened to them.

Bicycling started life as the Northern California Cycling Association (NCCA) Newsletter, published in San Rafael. It was sold several times before ending up as part of Rodale.

The next year saw some competition, The Two Wheel Trip.
I got a subscription for my birthday. At the time it was expensive $12.
never got the poster, did get the first issue, like 140+ pages, pretty high quality, almost all 4 color.
Never got the second issue., but it did make the newsstands. That was it. Poof.

These might just be my favorite C&V threads. Thank you for doing them.
I got rid of all my magazines because I did not value them enough and could not store them or afford to move them all over the country. I miss the older Bicycling! magazines.

Mike Neel takes the Senior event. I remember him showing up at the local Wednesday training race in 75,76'. Wearing his Magnaflex jersey... A real Professional cyclist. My junior catagory buds and I were in awe.
