Coolest chainring protector in the world. (Campagnolo content enclosed)

Thanks to a trade with 23skidoo, I now own this curiosity:

I traded for it, mainly for the novelty of the piece more then anything else. I'm not sure exactly why it exists, whether it is a cyclocross part, or whether it's just a very fancy pantleg protector. All I know is that it says "Patent CAMPAGNOLO," and it's finished just as nice as any chainring or crankset.

I've seen a similar - but not identical - NR pantleg guard on all the Raleigh Professionals shown in catalog photos after 1976, though the design mimics the NR pattern, not this. Near as I can figure it, it has been modified (namely rounded) at the edges outside the chainring bolts, but otherwise, it seems original.

Nevertheless, to handle it in person is a marvel - who would have thought that a front dork disk would be so appealing? I just might mount it on something, someday - this is one pantleg protector that won't detract from looks.

Which SR Apex? SR made half a dozen variants named Apex. I'd be keen on seeing the one you have in mind.

if it is what I think it is I believe they were sold in sets. it appears to be a chainguard for cyclocross. they were sold in pairs so you would have one on each side of a single chainring to keep the chain on the ring.

What a nice piece of bicycle history.

I used to have a similar curiousity...
The early model 1971 Schwinn Sports tourers came with a TA Specialties alpine gear 36-54 crankset that had a beautiful matching alloy TA Specialites leg guard.

It doesn't show up very well in the catalog pic but it's there...

I saw those in Catalog 17, but these don't match the pattern shown (and though it's been modified slightly, there is no evidence of hacking off an inner web). Perhaps an SR version?

I've seen one of those TA Pro 5 Vis 54t rings with the extra drilling for the guard, and the guard still mounted - Cyclartist has it on eBay (for some absurd sum), if I recall right.

What is the tooth count on the big ring of the crankset? 50 or 52 or something else? Did they ever make a guard for a 42 tooth ring?

I've seen those on eBay and bid on a couple of them.

I've got a Shimano 600 with one:

The first generation Dura Ace had them:
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/shimano1973/pages/da6.html

Yours was designed to replace the big ring, but it has been modified to sit on top.

At least there's another example in existence that matches it.

EDIT: Note below comments regarding watermark and seller's reputation (or lack of it).

It's as if Campagnolo put out a different one whenever they felt like it.

I would advise being acutely aware that the above mentioned company is more that a little bit disingenuous with their descriptions and pricing.

I don't think those are steel. This is the Campy three-pin version, it is not steel and it is flaking the same way. I think they were cast from some sort of Zn/Al/?? potmetal, polished and plated. The one below has two VERY different finishes - the outer face is/was a mirror-shiny flat surface, while the inner has a distinct pebbled surface. The inner plating has survived much better, even given insults from the chain:

The regularity at which these peel - and the aluminum-oxide looking surface below the chrome - makes me think these were a not-so-successful attempt at chroming aluminum.

The back certainly looks like it was bead blasted, just like most modern aluminum bits are today.
