Coolest chainring protector in the world. (Campagnolo content enclosed)
Thanks to a trade with 23skidoo, I now own this curiosity:
I traded for it, mainly for the novelty of the piece more then anything else. I'm not sure exactly why it exists, whether it is a cyclocross part, or whether it's just a very fancy pantleg protector. All I know is that it says "Patent CAMPAGNOLO," and it's finished just as nice as any chainring or crankset.
I've seen a similar - but not identical - NR pantleg guard on all the Raleigh Professionals shown in catalog photos after 1976, though the design mimics the NR pattern, not this. Near as I can figure it, it has been modified (namely rounded) at the edges outside the chainring bolts, but otherwise, it seems original.
Nevertheless, to handle it in person is a marvel - who would have thought that a front dork disk would be so appealing? I just might mount it on something, someday - this is one pantleg protector that won't detract from looks.

if it is what I think it is I believe they were sold in sets. it appears to be a chainguard for cyclocross. they were sold in pairs so you would have one on each side of a single chainring to keep the chain on the ring.

I used to have a similar curiousity...
The early model 1971 Schwinn Sports tourers came with a TA Specialties alpine gear 36-54 crankset that had a beautiful matching alloy TA Specialites leg guard.
It doesn't show up very well in the catalog pic but it's there...

What is the tooth count on the big ring of the crankset? 50 or 52 or something else? Did they ever make a guard for a 42 tooth ring?

I've got a Shimano 600 with one:
The first generation Dura Ace had them:

The regularity at which these peel - and the aluminum-oxide looking surface below the chrome - makes me think these were a not-so-successful attempt at chroming aluminum.
The back certainly looks like it was bead blasted, just like most modern aluminum bits are today.
