To WhyFi's point though, use an app like Garmin or Strava, and you have total elapsed time, total moving time, and actually total time while pedaling if you want it. Garmin app provides moving pace vs. overall pace, etc. Setting auto-pause isn't really hiding anything from anybody, just making it easier for any individual to look at what they deem as relevant.

I manage to know my total elapsed time after each ride by looking at the clock. When did I leave? When did I arrive? Do basic math.
That means little to me. Half my rides end up having maybe 5min of stopped time due to stoplights. The other half has probably 30-90min of stopped time due to those rides needing to be broken up with some waiting at 1 to 3 different points in the ride.

My Garmin shows both elapsed and riding time. It also uploads to Strava using Garmin Connect and I get both riding time and total elapsed actual riding time there too. So the answer is “On”.

It's funny that for all the same reasons that you lost, my conclusion isn't "On," but rather, "who cares?"

Auto pause on and set to 5mph so it doesn't take into account any walking.

When I first got auto-pause on my Cateye Mity, it was a game changer. Losing 10ths off your average at every traffic light is a really frustrating part of any ride.
Overall average vs moving average is a useful metric for determining time and pace lost to faff, particularly on group rides.

So how do you turn auto praise on anyway? I want my Garmin to start telling me I'm faster than anyone.

OFF. I don't care about moving speed that much. i do like to see how fast/slow my heart rate drops when caught at a light or whatever. auto-pause removes that tracking.

Auto-pause on when stopped for me so I can see my moving average power/speed/HR. Total elapsed time still displays anyway for when that matters during events.

Auto pause off. When the ride is done you get moving time total time, from that you get your stopped time. Also with it off you have to work harder to to average what you want to.

Auto pause ON. My Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt shows riding time and paused time after the ride. Although I rarely stop, it's usually to turn my blinking head and tailights on because I forgot and they are tough to reach while riding.

ON all the time. It's still not 100% accurate as the device does not pause instantaneously, but who cares. My Wahoo usually pauses 1-2 seconds after I've actually stopped.

For a second there I thought you were complaining that it took 1-2 seconds to auto-pause and then saw the bait and switch LOL!

I have it off. Average speed is meaningless.

I have mine off for the same reason. I really don't care much about average speed at all. I only watch power data and HR too. I watch my zones, speed is not a good measuring tool for me. Now if I were a TT or on another type training then I can see the need.
My Garmin when I upload shows overall time and moving data so that is good enough.
I honestly don't think there is a wrong answer here.
