What type of steel...?

Hi All

I am interested if anyone would know what kind of stainless steel would have been used to make chainrings, cranks, pedals etc in the first half of 20th century, in particular by UK manufacturing firms.

Thanks

Google is our friend:
" In 1924, Hatfield patented the 18-8 stainless steel, 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This austentic stainless would soon rise to become the most popular and widely used type of stainless steel."
and here's some more short historical notes:

Thanks this is very interesting. I was wondering how it changed over time in particular the mix of chromium and stainless steel. I presume this in part was influenced by the mechanism to produce the parts ie forging versus casting versus machining. If anyone know of any other resources which document this that would be very helpful.

Thanks
