Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Not going to happen! Because A) I'm working hard to do this to you and B) it will probably rain on ride day and there will be no dust.

Yeah, but my trainer isn't giving me obviously erroneous power figures.

For my 3rd "season" of regular road bike riding, I hope to:

1. Get down to 155lbs. (I'm currently 5'9", 162lbs, with a soccer players build, 36 yrs old)

2. Successfully do one sprint duathalon (run 5k, bike 12 miles, run 5k) (I have no where to practice swimming).

3. Successfully do at least one cyclocross race, and not be last.

4. Do all this with a normal weekly riding schedule of one 1.5 hour fast group ride, one 20 minute interval session, and one 30-minute hill-climbing ride.

I'm from Columbus Indiana, and you sir have some good hilly and gravel riding right outside of Madison to the North. We're lucky in that respect up here, too, but I'm sure you're able to patch together some awesome hilly rides in your neck of the woods. I'd encourage you to go on longer rides as your fitness and schedules allow.

I know about a bunch of hills I can ride to from my house in about 10 minutes, but I don't know about the awesome gravel roads...can you be more specific?

Time is indeed the constrainer with young kids and job, and letting my wife have time to run...(she runs, I ride)

This is crap. I might have to ride my bike today. They haven't groomed the trails at any of the snow parks, and the best trail at the Nordic Center is closed.

As I recall, you can Google "Gravel roads near Madison, Indiana" and you'll find stuff from the moto guys on sites like advrider.com. Some pretty awesome roads with epic stream crossings, etc.

2017 Goals:

- 4500 miles - 2016 goal was 4000 miles and I ended up with over 5000. For this year, I just don't know with local weather and my work schedule.

- Stay healthy, keep the rubber side down

- Get back to 162 lbs (only about 5-6 lbs to lose right now, but we're still in the gaining season, looking forward to the losing season)

- Have fun, do great rides with the quicker guys (& gals), try to keep up a 150 mile/week minimum

My perennial but never attained goal is to ride 5000 miles in the year, always hampered by a busy work and family life. I fit in my cycling by commuting my 14 mile shortest one-way route, and extending it as time and weather permit, including a long (greater than 40 mile) ride on Saturday for a partial work day at my convenience. Just yesterday, I prepared my spreadsheet for the year.

In the past few years I have been further motivated to train for at least one organized ride a year, as a Fifty-Plus Forum Annual Ride, and will be searching for such an activity this year. I further considered riding GOBA, the Greater Ohio Bicycling Adventure, a six day loop through various Ohio towns. But this year they were not offering the convenient motel lodging package, and that event then seemed a long way to drive to, in addition to setting up daily and living outdoors for the week.

In addition, for the first time we bought a second home in a resort town on Metro Boston’s scenic North Shore, a nice cycling route 40 miles long north of our condo in downtown Boston. The region is also good for road cycling, and train service with the fully assembled bike is readily available. I described it in my Cycling Guide to Metro Boston as:
Originally Posted by Jim from Boston

So with some finagling of the work (and commuting) schedule, the time and expense of going to Ohio will be replaced by regular weekend vacation cycling.

My only "goal" for 2017 is Don't Die.

Wouldn't mind Riding Lots, Seeing Cool Places, Having Fun, and perhaps even Putting In A Few More Miles Than I Have Previous Years.

But so long as I Don't Die I'm cool with whatever else happens this year.

Cycle more than 2016. 2016's total was 5760.76 km. I want to cycle more than that in 2017.

Complete Petite Year Round Randonneur. This is a challenge where we have to do a 100 km ride each month for a total of 1200 km. There is some flexibility in that we can do 50 km one month and 150 km the next to make up for it, but most of the time it should be a 100 km ride. The challenge started in November (that's when the Audax/Randonneuring year starts), so I've done 3 already.

In the past, I've done several CAM challenges (Century A Month, where I ride a 100 mile ride each month of the year), and would like to do that again, but realistically, with full-time work + university, I'm not sure I can commit to that schedule. However, I would like to do as many centuries as possible. Good training rides.

Complete Super Randonneur series. A Super Randonneur is Audax/Randonneuring's standard series and the series which is required to qualify for longer rides in most cases. It consists of one ride each of 200 km, 300 km 400 km, and 600 km, each of which has to be completed within a certain time limit.

Complete a 1000 km randonnee. This might be a long-shot. However, if the 600 km event goes well, there is a 1000 km 2 weeks later.

One 1000 km month.

Cycle up Mt Wellington again.

Cycletouring.

Walk a minimum of 1000 km, but hopefully beat last year's total of 1133 km.

Hike up a mountain or two.

Include some extra stuff like rowing, canoeing, weightlifting and maybe a bit of yoga. Improving my core strength and flexibility would probably be a good thing.

Complete at least 2 more courses at university.

Figure out what I want to do with my website ... and do it!

Travel ... of course. That's always on the list.
Done!

Rowan and I cycled up Mt Wellington today. 73.4 km with 1636 metres (5367.45 feet) straight up the side of the mountain. Not an easy ride!!
