World record is about 70 feet, so with a back on his bike he should easily make 60 feet, after a little practice.

I never thought about pole vaulting for distance. Apparnelty it is a Dutch/Frisian sport.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fierljeppen

The bicycle would give it interesting dynamics. Much more weight, but one could start with a fair amount of speed.

Perhaps build a pair of poles to attach to the bike like jousting lances. Full speed ahead with the lances in front of the bike. Drop them into the river, and fly!!!

Fierljeppen
You could have a bike on each side of the river so you wouldn't have to worry about getting the bike across.

Funny film. It makes sense with the Dutch canals.

The second attempt had me laughing.

This ^^^^^^ wins the award for the coolest-named option presented thus far.

"Does your municipality's alt-trans multi-modal transportation plan include fierljeppen?"

These were German Frysians, Ostfriesen, they don't take their folklore/sport as serious as the Dutch Frysians appearantly otherwise he would have known it is a skill. Frysland is pretty wet, so every farm field has a water filled ditch around it about a meter wide, the pole vault is a relatively easy way to cross those fieds. I cycled into such a ditch once and it's only funny for the bystanders. But as a sport it has grown pretty impressive:

Some inventor should design a telescoping spring-loaded pole so that the Fierlieppen'er could trigger it instead of having to climb up while balancing the pole one one end. Maybe you could wind it up short enough to carry on the bike.

That's got to be the most unusual multimodal commute I've seen.

Vancouver planner Brent Toderian is fond of saying, you cannot justify a bridge by counting the number of people who currently swim across the river.

I think more accurate to say "You can't decide not to build a bridge, based on the fact that not enough people currently swim across"

If the need to get across is so great that some people are currently swimming, that sounds like a pretty good justification for a bridge.
