8 speed quick link on 9 speed chain?

I have a quick link for an 8-speed chain. No longer have any 8-speed chains but have 9-speed. Can the 8-speed quick link be used with a 9 speed chain?

In my experience, it will not work properly. Even if you get it to seemingly snap together, the chances of it holding are slim.

ok thx. $3 for a correct one is cheap insurance for a long ride.

I've done it. Generally you can go up one, 8 speed QL on a 9 speed, 9 speed QL on a 10, 10 on 11 .............. but not the other way.
Now I don't do it as a permanent thing but as a get out of the woods/get home fix it works. I always keep a few different ones because well I have them, they don't weigh anything, and I might come across somebody that needs one.

The chains get narrower as the number of gears increase and a narrower QL won't fit on a wider chain.
