No hubs to be found; Also, Velo-Orange Hubs worth the money?
I've recently learned that I picked the wrong time to look into picking up a new rear hub to upgrade my old ride. Did Shimano just shut down and not tell me? There's even a dearth on the electronic bay dot coms machine. If anyone has a line on a mid-level shimano rear hub, 130mm, 36h 11-speed capable and silver, please let me know. I see you can get these from Velo-Orange, but, man, they're spendy. I know precious little about them. They're pretty, but are they worth the money?

hubs in general seem to be order and wait. White industries has a 12 week order to receive time period as an example. I am looking at some hope hubs, but order and then the vendor orders so don't know a time frame yet

Combination of silver, 36 hole and 11 speed = very hard to find at the best of times.
You might do better with 32 hole than 36, and a matte finish than silver.
Just built up a set of 32 hole 6800 Ultegra hubs in silver (not polished) finish on wider Mavic A319 rims for the Davidson tourer. Work great, look great, but had to snag those hubs as soon as I saw them.
No opinion on the VO stuff, sorry.

I purchased a rear "no tools disassembly" hi/lo (High flange/Low flange) when they were blowing them out for $50 a few years ago, so that was a good deal. I see the same model in low flange is $165 now. I've been happy with it so far. Maybe not $165 happy...
A quick perusal of the interwebs shows that you need to convert your bike to disc brakes and settle for black.

My most recent wheel build (Shimano compatible) used Bitex RAF/RAR-12 hubs. A nice option if you can do with 32 holes or less (oops just saw the 36-hole note). Come in silver too...

I was also going to recommend Bitex, but that’s likely 32-hole.
Actually, looks like ProWheelbuilder has Shimano 105 in 36-hole:

I've been using a lathe to polish ano off of black hubs, but never have gone so far as to remove disc mounts, mainly because I think I may be forced into using disc brakes at some point, and I would rather have my wheels at least somewhat futureproof in that regard. The centerlock disc mounts don't look so horrible, especially if you get the little rubber cover for them.

Trying to remember the Japanese component maker that has made hubs for years - not Nitto, not DiaCompe, sorry but I am at a loss but this company still is in business making high quality cassette hubs. They made hubs for SunTour & Specialized. There were some (an NOS front rear set) of said brand on eBay for under $100.

I mean those 105 hubs are kinda silver. You're probably not going to do much better except for VO, which are quality parts I might add.

But for future reference, what's your experience been with VO hubs, if you would?

You're right. The 105s aren't as pretty as I'd like, but those VOs are twice the price. Also this hub is going to be laced to a 30-year-old Ritchey rim, so maybe I should be a little more reasonable.

They might be twice the price but if you get a hub with difference dimensions you'll have to get new spokes. Maybe if the VO hub is the correct fit you can reuse your existing spokes. Maybe, maybe not, with either hub, just food for thought.

That’s a good point. I don’t know, honestly. I know where I want to end up, and have a serious miserly streak but lack the skills to do this myself. Now that I say it out loud, a new hub in an old rim sounds dumb. Is that the way it normally goes —new hub, new rim?
