Nomenclature

I like lettering on my bike. I like the words “Dura Ace” on all the components; I like “Planet Bike” on my water bottle cages; I like the various Columbus decals. Cinelli in gold on my toe straps. Lettering on the brake and shift cable housing. The various sponsor racing decals. I even enjoy having the small white manufacturing info on my chainring bolts. I dig any information stamped into my parts.
Anyone else enjoy having this visible information?

no. Prefer to pick my own logoless color scheme.

You notice the lettering on your cable housing? Boy.

Personally, I picked the look of my last bike. One of a kind color.

I put Hotline (a word for riding fast through slow traffic) stickers on to most of my bikes to support Terry Berentsen, need to get another 3 pack. It juxtaposes nicely with the safety pizza flag I put on the back to have something fluttering around. I don’t think anyone’s noticed the hotline stickers but I know they are there and they make me happy so that’s what’s important.

do you write dura ace on cheap components? If so that’s hilarious

I’m sure you painted your bike yourself with no other identifying marks. Nice!

Isn't that just branding? Isn't nomenclature just the names we give parts? Like wheels, pedals, chain stays?

when it's due, I'll likely make it slightly different than the oem.

I took a Sharpie and blacked out the component logos/lettering on my latest build.

Nomenclature is not the correct word for what you're talking about. Look it up.

I wear briefs and they are all a boring white by JC Penney. But all cotton except for the waist band.

That gives you a veritable blank canvas. Get yourself a sharpie and go nuts!

I am grudgingly tolerant of the lettering that appears on the outside plates of my Shimano chain, permitting me to get the directionality correct slightly in excess of 50% of the time.

I appreciate branding because it helps me identify what’s good, what’s not so good, and what’s trash. If a producer isn’t proud enough to brand their own production, I take that as a sign it’s not worth putting on my bike.

I like branding because vendors pay me to put electrical tape over their logos so that I do not defame their band by displaying it while I ride.

Not a fan of branding. I tolerate it where it's inevitable, but I intentionally choose the least logo-festooned parts I can find.

Technically, "nomenclature" is a system of naming, for example IUPAC in chemistry. So, if you wanted to know the name of something you would ask "what is the name of CH2COOH in the IUPAC nomenclature system", or similar. In common usage, however, people often use "nomenclature" in a looser fashion, for example "what is the name of the set of gears on the back wheel in bicycle nomenclature". We would answer "generally 'cassette', though if you have an older bike it could be a 'free wheel'" even though, technically, there is no formal bicycle "nomenclature", there is a de facto set of conventional names in the bicycle industry.

(I could be wrong, it is possible that the UCI does have official names for bikes/bike parts. I don't know, I don't find anything in a quick Google search.)

Well, since he didn't say he was doing that, he most likely isn't. But feel free to assume the worst about everyone; just like my mother.

Why don't you tell me the correct word, since you clearly know everything. And don't just say "branding," because that's not necessarily what it is.

"Branding" is what I would call it. The name of the manufacturer (for example, "Planet Bike" on your water bottle cage), or the model ("Dura-ace" on your components), or company logos (like the head tube badge).

What's your suggestion? "Nomenclature" is definitely not the correct word, as cxwrench noted.

"Branding" is probably the best term. In the automotive world, "badging" or "badges" are terms used often but they are usually 3-D metal or plastic letters or emblems, not paint or decals like on bikes.

I like the names and logos and badges on my bikes. And on my cars.

No. In fact, I’ve been known to remove such markings on certain products that go on my bikes. I do it on certain clothing. On my Levi’s denim jeans for example…I remove the orange tag on the back pocket, and the faux leather tag sewn into the exterior waistband. If a company wants me to be their advertising mule, they can pay me, or give me the item for free.
