Another thing I find is when there's a gradient, the larger the road, the slower you seem to climb. Frustratingly so, at times. So you push harder and go faster.

The higher the speed limit, the flatter the surface. The smaller the road, the more severe and frequent the climbs.
That said, I try to never push into effort. I don't believe there is any advantage to it, only expense. I push the same modest watts on the back roads that I do on big roads.

In the UK sporty blades have time trialed on some of the same roads since the 1920s. Times for distance have come down, and the general consensus is this is due in part to the aero push of a hundred years of ever more, faster motor vehicle traffic.

I ride in a metropolitan area. When peddling on a four lane road with posted speed limit greater than 45 mil /hour, I always experience motor vehicle vortex. The vehicles create a miniature weather system, pulling me along. In addition, it feels as if you are drafting in a peloton. I take it one step further, I always take a lane on a four lane highway if there is a limited shoulder. I ride squarely in the track where a cars right tire would normally be to almost center of that right lane. The sooner that car or truck driver realizes you have taken the lane, the quicker, he or she will give you courtesy and move far left. if I see that they are not moving over, I start weaving like a drunk person and that scares them…., or sub conscientiously brings their attention from their phone and back onto the road. All traffic that would normally be occupying two lanes, now are traveling in the far left lane, creating this wonderful vortex, thus enabling me to ride 2-3 miles faster for the same amount of energy inputted to the pedals.
