That resonated with me immediately. I experience it sometimes when cycling. I suppose most people probably call it "in the zone." Despite getting what Giambi meant, and thinking about it often over the years, it can be hard to describe. I felt sexy yesterday on my ride.

It has an element of enhanced performance. An element of confidence, like you "own the place." An element of the reward being greater than the effort expended. It's a very psychologically aware and alert state.

Help me out here. If you know what I am talking about, what do you call it, and how do you describe it?

EDIT: After reading a few responses, it looks like I should mention that when Giambi said he felt sexy, it was not about his appearance.

Did you have figjam on your toast this morning?

On a serious note, are you an adult onset athlete? If you been competing in sports, you know those moments come and go. You have good days and bad days. Good days when you still lose and bad days when you win. Days where you can't miss a shot or ones when you can't make one. And so on and so on. The main thing is to act like you been there/done it before. Otherwise, people will know you haven't.

There is a class instructor at my gym that refers to sweating as "sexy." When the class ends she says everyone has "the glisten."

Jason Giambi never appeared to have a firm grasp of the English language so I’m not sure that I would want to refer to his use of the word ‘sexy’ for any reason.
But certainly not as a comparison to cycling lol.
You do you though and get down with your sexy cycling self

Do they ever. I am glad you mentioned that. They are indeed elusive. You can't will them on yourself. When you have those moments, what do you call them?

I would have never predicted one yesterday. I had a crushing headache. I wanted to lay down on the couch and sleep. It took all the fortitude I could muster to get off my butt, get in the saddle and give it a try.

He wasn’t talking about euphoria, flow, or the runners high. He just wasn’t. It’s a confidence gained by knowing your own capabilities in comparison to the challenge of what you’re facing.

In the baseball example, it’s stepping up and knowing that he can hit against that pitcher. That he knows he can crush it.

In my stronger years I frequently felt that out rock climbing. Looking up at some horror show of overhanging, bad gear, big injury potential and yep, I knew it was going to be just fine. I can’t do that anymore, anything I get up is touch and go these days.

I was never a fast enough racer to look around at the starting line and know I was going to podium. I occasionally did get a good result but that’s not the same.

Maybe it’s in planning a ride “I’m going to go over all those mountains, before lunch” or something like that. Looking at a pretty difficult day and never questioning if you can do, so just go do it. Maybe that is as close as us unsexy amateurs can get.

Sexy - confident - cocky - good at what you do

Its all the same.

Does anyone want to shave my legs?

Another poster who wanted to show the world how hard he'd try to not get a topic of conversation. Since there's nothing for you here, maybe there's a good disc brake thread for you to play in.

The most effective kind of bicycle advocacy is to make bicycling look sexy. I love this new analogy of bicycling with the swagger of a slugger stepping up to the plate to swing for the fences. I feel that same mix of confidence and suspense when I ride.

Does the OP think its 'unbridled confidence', something like in this Mike Tyson post-fight interview?:

Only once.

I was climbing a wall out of the saddle and two cute girls in a Pinto pulled up next to me. The passenger grabbed my glutes and then smacked them. It sent a twinge of sexy feeling thru my body.

I was feeling proud of my little Cat 4 shaven guns that day.

I may not be too sexy for my bike, but I get a kick out of making single speed look easy and fun.

Yep, and it's an "in the moment" confidence. It is while you are batting and while you are pedaling.

I don't know if "sexy" is the right word, but I really enjoyed racing the commuter trains on the Schuylkill.

Do you ever feel sexy on the bike?

Yes. I sometimes get the feeling being described when cycling on busier or higher speed roads in the traffic lanes. Roads where motorists see few to no cyclists. Being in the center of left turn only lanes with cars and semi trucks in front, behind, and alongside of me. Keeping tabs on myself and everyone around me. Confidently and seamlessly occupying and switching lanes, while signaling my intentions and safely fitting right in. It does attract attention and sometimes feels “sexy”. I’d say the “calm confidence” that one presents is a main ingredient.

Here's a mental image for you: I had just gotten back from a ride, and had stripped off my sweaty jersey, when my next-door-neighbor came over for something. I stepped out on the stoop to talk to her, then noticed a car driving by, with the occupants looking at us, mouths hanging open.

Then I realized what they were looking at: I was wearing only bib shorts and a cycling cap with the brim turned up. Looked just like one of the guys from Right Said Fred. Yeah, I'm too sexy for my jersey.

OP and most of this thread are both prime examples of compensation for a lack of genuine sexiness, whether by demeanor or physicality.

We had one of those "get off of my lawn" grumpy neighbors. One night, Coors may or may not have been involved, we decided we were going to use the "Snot Wagon" to run over the new magnolia tree he planted in his front yard. Well, we got stuck. It was a workout trying to quietly get it unstuck. We succeeded without getting caught. A month or so later, we decided to try a different tactic. This one worked beautifully. We fertilized the 4 letter word for peter in his lawn. 3 weeks later, it was a gorgeous lush green that stood in stark contrast to the rest of the lawn. That's not easy to get rid of by the way.

You get it. Seamlessly is a great word. Things just flow effortlessly. Unnaturally so.

Don't feed the boring troll.
His insults aren't even amusing enough to read, let alone respond to.
I've got him on ignore, and you're circumventing that by quoting him.

I'm still trying to think of a better word than "sexy" here. For me, it's the sense that this machine is going to go as fast as I want it to and today that's damn fast. Zoom! And I don't get tired, I just keep going and going. It's kind of an out-of-body, my brain is directly connected to the bike kind of feeling.
