Here's a pic of my "73 World Voyageur. I started working on it 12 years ago and stopped. Hadn't touched it since, I should give it another go and get it completely rebuilt.

looks all original, almost unused. I have a Schwinn Passage grey , but wanted a Voyageur, just found locally . She needs to be gone through.. probably original grease.. I am going to change out stem , handlebars and brake levers. Any suggestions??

In my quest for a winter project I found this buried deep in old cl ads. Price was higher than I pay for old bikes, but…..after researching seemed like a good bike to work in. Missing the usual components otherwise a complete bike. Would like a original rear derailleur as this sun tour looks most out of place. The frustrating part. At some point new cables were added. Thing is,3 metal cable guide were used,scratching the crap out of top tube. And small dent was under one. Then the squish from kickstand. Then today the weather was good for a ride…Wow! Wasn’t long and all that patina felt great! I’ve painted 7 bikes over last couple years and pretty confident this bike would come out awesome. For now I’ll stick to a overhaul and leave it at that. Just needed to talk about it. Lol.

Outfitted some very nice looking Swift Industries panniers. First time using a low-rider rack on this bike and I'm using the long spacers that came on the fork blades to apparently keep the rack from being too close to the bike, but I'm not sure this is best practice. It seems just a little too pushed out.

Thoughts?

But, if the Le Tour Luxe is The Voyaguers cousin, The Passage is it`s brother.

Hey bro. I have a green Voyageur and a grey Passage . Didn't know they came in red. My Voyageur seems all original, but still haven't gotten around to putting new grease etc. Still haven't road the Voyageur. Curious in the differences, one is made in Japan, the other here in USA...

Those are nice bags!! I had an '84 Miyata 1000 which came with the same type of "spaced out" mounts. I ran that same rack system and it seemed fine to me. Although my racks had the extra stay that looped over the wheel, just in front of the fender, and helped stabilize the racks. If yours is missing, I bet the Velo Orange Fender stay, mounted to the racks with p-clamps, would do the trick.

I think my particular Passage was only made for 15 months. I could be wrong. It was made in America. The only options for colors for my 1986 Passage were Midnight Blue and Imperial Rose. I think in 1987 the Voyageur came in Imperial Rose.

I don't think that I've ever seen someone install a stem mounted backwards like that on purpose before.

Cousin, Brother, Mother - The '85 Luxe was definitely in the family. Nice looking Passage. I had a passage come through my garage but it was dark blue. Also had a '87 Imperial Rose voyageur come through, but no where near as nice as your passage

Thanks! And nope I do have that extra stay, this was just a test fitting so I didn't bother putting it on.

I really like the green. Is that an '86? I have a '90 - they went with Tange frames instead for the '90-'91 models before it was dropped from the lineup. I inherited this Voyageur from my uncle, otherwise I would have found the next size up and preferably an earlier year/colour a long time ago. A great riding bicycle. I'm looking forward to some adventures with it this year. Here's a pic from last year. I've improved the fender lines and fit the pump properly since and fitted the original SP-155 pedals with clips and straps:

This is awesome, I think every Voyageur from the early 80s to 91 looks awesome thanks to their colors and decal choices. Just classy. Mine is an 86, which I specifically sought out for the british pine green.

Any recommendations for a modern sealed bottom bracket for an 86 voyageur? Model/size etc?

I`m elderly with a very bad back.
I need to ride very "straight up". Any leaning forward gets painful real quick. Switching to a long stem , mounted backwards helped me a lot. The first few rides seemed a little odd, but without the back pain, I got used to it.

Would upright and swept back handlebars be even better, without having to turn the stem around?

The original stem on my Passage was pretty long. Really gave me a stretched out , hunched over ride. The stem I have on there now is pretty much a straight pipe. LOL Not much of an extension. I probably could have went without turning it around. But, it seems with my back, ever inch I can subtract from bending over helps.
Upright swept back would probably have worked. But, I like the different positions I can use with the original drop down bars.

The cranks are Shimano FC-B124, correct? Those are spec'd for 121.5 asymmetrical BB, so a modern symmetrical 124 MIGHT do the trick if you have a decent amount of clearance between the stay and inner ring. If it's pretty tight already, I'd go with a 127. I've used a couple of IRD and a couple of Velo Orange bottom brackets as replacements and both have worked great. About the same price and quality as I remember.

Hm, beicster in another thread mentioned his 85 takes a 127.5, so I'm thinking I will go with a close to that as I can find. Need to just pull it out and measure though. I imagine my 86 is the same though.

I think 85 Voyageurs came with Sugino AT Crankset, which I can also confirm a modern 127 symmetrical works for those (at least it did for my 84 Miyata 1000).

I have my 87 Voyageur parted out right now, just measured the BB and it is indeed a 121.5 asymmetrical.
