One ultralight option touring the GAP/C&O

Checking on the latest conditions on the GAP/C&O and ran across this:

The guy is leaving Pittsburgh Saturday for the 325 mile run to DC. He has a sleeping bag & pad in front, the tent is on the rear. The rest of his (minimal) gear will be in a backpack. Of course..he's running tubeless.

What's his low and high in gear inches, that's the most important thing to know.

Well, I never thought about leaving half of my bike at home to cut weight.

Good one altair
that's a cool setup, it's got to be at least a 3in tire, and a disc brake too.

No Schlumpf on this one, but he mentioned he has it on a 36er he rides.

As is, he plans to cover 30-60 miles/day.

That's the other half of the "ultralight". Ultralight has been discussed here often, but I haven't seen anyone suggest leaving half the bike at home. I think these bikes run 17-20ish lbs(unloaded). Apparently unicycle touring across country or around the world is a "thing". Hadn't run across that one..

High gear, low gear, all the same gear..

I have never seen a unicycle on tour (yet). However, I have heard of people doing this. I have not, however, heard of an "off road" unicycle like this.

I would be interested to hear of the riders' experience with the trip.

There are two people who have unicycled around the world. The first was Wobbling Wally Watts in the 1970s. He only averaged around 10 miles a day. He made his own unicycle with a 42 or 43" wheel. Ed Pratt started around March 2015 and averaged around 20 miles a day on what looks to be a 36" unicycle. Neither one of them had a two speed Schlumpf and neither one of them were certified by Geneses World Records.

This is Ed Pratt..somewhere in Asia, with a full tour load.

Hard to fathom.

We'll be day and a half behind the guy starting the GAP today. Hopefully we'll run into him at some point. Beer is on me..

I find all bike stuff neat, from commuting to mtbing to touring to the pro peleton.
Ive been lucky enough to ride a pennyfarthing, which was up there for awesomeness, but I've never been on a unicycle , and really find them to be the most amazing for how the riders actually do it and the whole cool wacky aspect of them.

traveling on one with gear, that's another level of uniqueness, that's for sure

That unicycle had a pretty low gear for the GAP and C&O which is pretty flat.

I stopped to check out a scenic overlook about five years ago, this was leaning against the sign, he had a bigger gear ratio.

The tire size on this one is 36X2.25

Heard about him, but did not see him. I did see a young woman with an AK amp, riding ~28mm tires, she passed me.
