You guys are so Cino in that pic. Wood rims and cork brake shoes on steep, gravel descents is a bit insane.

My front cable gave on a descent before lunch on the first day. Had to drag a foot to stop, on a few hills. Limped into the rest stop where they did have a replacement cable. Freaked me out the rest of the day.

This is always tough for me to schedule with work but it is a ride I really want to do. I know this is a ride that all the cool BF kids do.
I rebuilt my '73 Motobecane Grand Record with an eye towards doing this and similar rides: 50/34 crank, 14-28 freewheel, and 700 x 35c Schwalbe Marathon Mondial tires. Works fine for Iowa gravel but my understanding is that Montana gravel is tougher and undoubtedly steeper. Plus the crackled paint is just icing on the cake for a gravel grinder.

how about a Cino bike and setup style question?
my ride is an 84 team miyata with dura ace ex deraillers and 7400 crankset at with 52/39 and 12-28 freewheel. 7400 dura ace brakes also
I am working hard at losing weight, getting in shape and getting better at climbing.....but expect hill challenges
What is better style: Keep my current setup and accept some walking or put a 6500 ultegra triple on front (with rx100 rear derailler from my parts bin) and walk a bit less
wheels and tires will be interesting choice also running some gravel king 28 on mavic ma40 rim (using this for training) but also looking into doing tubular on mavic gel330 and corsa control 30mm (will try this if the weight loss keeps going well)

I would take gravel kings on MA40s any day over GL330s. Tubular is awesome, but those are some light race-day rims.
The best way to shed weight on the bike is to lighten the engine.

I'm hoping to join the fun this year (after some recent prodding by gugie to do so). I've got my PX-10 stripped down—just need to build it back up appropriately, as I don't think my '83 Univega Alpina Uno qualifies (checks most boxes, but is vintage MTB after all).

Here's a pic (in Montana even!) of the bike I intend to bring. @gugie tells me I should lose the fenders for Cino.
It's not every day that @gugie says a bike shouldn't have fenders. There must be a serious reason for that.

That’s the only reason I might shy away from fenders, but a number of people have used fenders. Some roadie snobs might look down their noses at you, but when it decides to rain, you can laugh at them!
