Today I rode past an interesting looking CD... but I had just got a good pace going and coudn't bring myself to break it.

Dag-mab-It, you folks got me looking along side the road for those $20 bills (Come -on - baby- papa needs a new pair of shoes!) . Went out last night, 26 miles, got a bungee cord and a rusty screw-driver. Doesn't this ruin your rythm stopping to pick something up? especially going up a hill? I'm giving it up, its to hard to get a good rythm started again.

I have found tools and plastic figures including a Geico Geko, but the most interesting things are the 13 United States Flags ( from cars ) that I have picked up. All since the start of Gulf War II

Some good tools including an SK 1/4" ratchet and a Snap-On 13mm combination wrench. A good story--wish it were mine: The owner of a bike store in Silverdale, WA (@35 NW of Seattle) was taking a weekend off to ride to his parents' house in Centralia and back. Found a little toy Gumby in the street in front of his own house upon leaving, then found a matching Pokey when within a few miles of his parents' home 145 miles later!

I thought about this post today on a ride. About 8 each - 12" trout (fish) still in ice - NO were near a fishing hole. Uncleaned. I didn't stop to inspect. Wierd.

I FINALLY found something. It was a little stuffed Elmo. He now accompanies us on all our rides, hanging out of my handlebar bag!! The kids love seeing him with his arms flapping in the breeze!

Those *might* be CO2 cartridges, but they are quite likely to be spent
nitrous oxide cartridges. High School kids and rednecks like to drive around sucking on ballons filled with the stuff.

The carts. are supposed to be used in a contraption that whips normal cream into whipped cream in the foodservice industry......

Not something I wanted to find - a dead swan - in a wildlife preserve. Stopped by the preserve office to let them know. Thought it was real out of place. No ponds visibly around, didn't appear to be shot - probably hit by a car.

(Picture above) I think thats a California Condor, probably why its tagged(#68) for keeping track of health and movement. These birds were nearly extinct in the 1980s but fortunately saved by a breeding in captivity and release into the wild program. With the ocean in the background I'm guessing this is on the Big Sur Coast. If anyone has info on this pic please post or PM me.

I found a magnet license plate in the grass that was a dealer plate. I took it by the dealership and the salesman was quite happy, as he was going to have to pay for a new one and the registration fee that is required.

I found an iPhone one day with a smashed screen. It still worked, but was passworded, so I couldn't get into it. When I got home, I tossed it into my car, a Prius. Later while leaving the library, the normally quiet Prius began making Harley Davidson noises - the iPhone's ring tone. There was a text message on screen, "If you found this phone please call ... "

The guy put his BlackBerry and phone on his bumper for a second, forgot about them, and drove off. No Blackberry, but he got the iPhone back. Lucky, he had damage protection, but not loss protection, on the phone, so he was a happy guy.

Yup. It was during the Highway 1 road closure a year and a half ago, when the bridge was out. I was able to get quite close without spooking it. I have a whole bunch of pictures. They were taken on my iPhone with digital zoom, which is why the quality isn't great.

The number is actually 168, and this one is named "Beak Boy". (The 100 is color-encoded).

A pristine Red-tailed Hawk tail feather.

A couple of days before I found that feather I was walking in the neighborhood where my son's taking tennis lessons and saw a Red-Tailed Hawk catch a mole or some other critter in a front yard. The hawk began eating the mole not more than 10 yards from me. I froze. It saw me but kept feeding. I watched for five minutes or more, fascinated that this hawk ignored me and kept feeding. It finally looked over at me, picked up the critter and casually flew off.

I was riding uptown on a fun ride by myself and was thinking about that hawk two days prior. I saw an orange flash in my peripheral vision but ignored it at first. I rode about 50 yards, stopped and turned around. Something made me turn around. I can't explain it. There was heavy traffic and when I got back to where I saw the orange flash, there it was. A perfect Red-tailed Hawk feather lying on the street. Those things just don't drop out of the sky, not in the city, and no, there wasn't a dead carcass anywhere.

I took it home and have it in my office. It holds a lot of significance to me. It wasn't a coincidence. It means something but I don't know what.

Stopped on Thursday's ride on a quiet road along Corp lake land to check some illegally dumped logs in the ditch (always looking for free turning or firewood) and found the local dead dog dumping grounds. A dozen or so skeletons and carcasses in various states in 100 feet of road. Kind of creepy and sad.

I've seen plenty of stuff on the side of the road, but usually all I will stop for is tools. I've gotten more than a few sockets, both metric and SAE, and all my Snap-On tools that way.

I found three separate items. I found an old rusty channel lock...a cell phone...and a wallet with credit cards and employee ID card.

After some internet searching I found the wallet owners address. He didn't live far away and I took it to his home. The cell phone was locked so i just took it to the nearest cell phone store to see if they could unlock it and determine the owner. I kept the rusty channel locks.

3 years ago we found a pistol during a group ride. One of the guy was a cop and he stay with it until the local police showed up to investigate.

I ride out in country gravel roads in the Midwest, so have found my share of beer cans...sometimes unopened. Once found a Yeti aluminum beverage can “coozie”, still new in the wrapper...definitely the most substantial keeper.

I also run, in the city, mostly in the wee hours of the morning, and have found more substantial things. On several occasions I have found credit cards, drivers licenses, and other wallet items...once including the wallet itself. I usually run to the address and drop it in the mailbox, unless the area is sketchy or the drivers license photo looks particularly “methy” in which case I take it to the police.

Pro tip: stuff falls out of the back of trucks when they cross railroad tracks at high speed. I almost netted a decent angle grinder near our big RR crossing, but decided to leave it and come back after my run...long gone by then.
