I'm I Nuts?
I just heard that Gas prices will go up, again! I've added a Carradice Longflap bag to the bike so I can pick up small things (Like Bread, Milk or other such things.) on the way home from work. I'm I nuts for using a Fixed Gear this way? I mean, I could use a gear bike but I don't always need to pull a trailer or haul heavy stuff. What do you think?

Carrying milk is well within the capabilities of a fixed gear (or any) bike.

I take my fg on grocery runs all the time but I use an enormous messenger bag to carry my loot.

I have toodled around on the local velodrome on a fixie. Some of the serious track riders there can do absolutely anything on a singlespeed: accelerate like crazy, stop on a dime. If you feel safe, go for it. And congrats for not driving!

Fixed-gear is really only suitable for carrying rice cakes. You'll want a 9-speed cassette for bread, and a 10-speed cassette for milk.

I use mine this way all the time. I have a frame with rack points too, which helps. The grocery paniers are perfect for this!

I think you should do anything that seems fun or "crazy". Personally, I hate it if I add weight to my fixed gears, in the form of racks or whatever, but if you are carrying the weight in a pack I think it should be fine. I do have several geared bikes, and one of them is my grocery bike.
