Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You can’t mail stuff to NZ from the US? Failed state.

Working a 1/2 day today then heading to DC for the weekend. No riding, but it's a wedding that has been postponed for a year already, so I am willing to skip a ride or two in order to celebrate with my family. It's my sister's older son who is getting hitched. BTW my sister has made a good (not quite 100%, but good enough) recovery from her brain injury that happened this spring.

fun fact: only vaccinated guests are allowed at the wedding. They are not joking.

Yep. If I didn't ride in the cold, I'd miss at least 5 months of cycling.

Everyone has their own comfort level. One of the guys in my club REFUSES to ride if it's below 50F.

I miss more rides in the winter because of icy runoff on the roads rather than the temperature.

same here.

I don’t mind riding in the winter. MUPs are empty, seems like less traffic, and a lot less cyclist out.

Only thing I dislike, my riding time is extremely limited, and it’s dark.

I don’t know if it’s my gear or if it’s just normal, but I can only ride for about 90 mins 32 and below. Once I start to sweat it’s game over.

It does not work for everyone, but best advice is start lowering zipper(s) or shedding layers an hour into your ride. If you expose more of your body to the cold you may be able to ride longer. The goal is to stay cool enough to not have to sweat.

My wife said we already ate half of the bag of onions from Wegmans, since no symptoms we are going to take our chances and keep them.

I need to get a descent light weight jacket. All I have is a heavy thermal which I never wear and three wind breakers. One wind breakers has no venting, the other two do, But I find all three trap heat. They are also all big on my now. I lost even more weight and now they flap into the wind.

Manager at trek recommended the gore tec shake dry (this might be wrong). for a rain jacket, I’m not sure what would make a good light weight winter jacket.

I have a tendency to over heat.

Clothing is very personal so I rarely give specific recommendations. Strategy depends on whether temps/conditions will change during ride or remain stable. If you warm up and/or temps warm up, you may need to be prepared to shed a layer in addition to zipper play. I have been doing cold weather rides for many years so I know what works for me.

When it starts getting cold, a vest is my first grab. Having 3 more pockets is important when clothes are being added and removed.

Those Gore "Shakedry" jackets come with a premium price tag.

Hard pass. If it's really cold AND raining I will Zwift.
