Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

God! What a comedy of errors!

Okay, so I've done all of Zwift Academy except the Finish Line Ride, which is the same as the Baseline Ride. So I THOUGHT I signed up for the Finish Line ride at the convenient time of 6 PM. I set everything up and climbed on the bike at 5:45, and I was doing a nice boring warmup when I saw that the event I'd signed up for was the Baseline Ride!

So I go to the Companion, and I see that the next Finish Line Ride is at 7 PM. I sign up for it, drop out of the 6 PM baseline. Get off the bike, go clean up the kitchen for a while.

6:45, I'm back on the bike. I do a 10 minute warmup, do a spindown calibration, and join the event. I'm sitting there in the starting pen, lazily spinning the pedals, and somebody comments, and I wanted to respond. I start typing a message, but then think better of it. I don't want to leave the half-written message there, waiting to be sent by an accidental press of the return key, so I do what you do in every other goddam program on earth - I hit the Escape key. In Zwift, that chucks you out of the game, and you can't get back in. You can only start another ride.

That's what happened. I'm suddenly at the "Save Ride?" screen. GAH!!!! So I save ride (why?), and started another ride, hoping the "Join Event?" button would appear, but no. So I'm fiddling with the Companion, which still says I'm signed up, but it doesn't do anything, and then it says, "The Event Has Started"

GAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!

Next time the ride is available is 9 PM! So I come up, worked with The Younger Boy to make dinner, which will be ready at about 8:30. Now I have to figure out what to do about eating dinner. I don't think it's a good idea to eat, because this is supposed to be 3 all out efforts, and I don't want to use that orange bucket next to the trainer.

Just to make the comedy complete, I had completed the medium effort, and cut at least 2 seconds off my time, and I was about 2 "miles" from the long sprint, and...

I FLATTED.

That's right. I flatted on an INDOOR TRAINER. I started feeling the tire slipping, and I thought, WTF? Sure enough, the tire was squishy. A few moments later, I could squeeze the sidewalls together. A few moments after that it was dead flat. No *BANG!*, no *FFffFFffFFffFFff*, just went flat.

I can only assume that Fate doesn't want me to do this ride tonight. I'm sure as hell not going to try again at 11 PM!!!!

Post mortem on the flat - a patch I'd put on that tube LAST DECEMBER, over 1000 road miles ago, gave out and started leaking. I will have to give some thought to whether I want to ride with patched tubes, since this could easily have happened while I was descending at speed.

I plan to do a bike ride today. And tomorrow. Neither of them longish. One or both of them partly off pavement.

It's wet here but not cold. Club riding friends have delayed the start and changed the route. This means lots of climbing with faster and younger riders. Maybe I'll go solo again.
