tip -
the crank removal threads are standard 22mm
however the head of the fixing bolt is 16mm so the clearance for a spanner is quite tight
one can either use the Zeus specific tool or else grind down a 16mm socket to make it into a thinwall so as to fit...
recommend Zeus chainset owners to retain the 16mm fixing bolts as they render the chainset more difficult to steal

on the slot cars.I didn't have enough 16mm sockets to sacrifice one, but I have several 5/8" Spark plug sockets. They're close enough to 16mm. Spinning it on an extension made it easy peasy.

forgot to mention that this find comes from something of a "golden window" in terms of time
launch of the first 2000 series components was 1974 (only a partial road ensemble - a full ensemble was offered at launch by combining the 2000 components with existing Criterium ones)
wonderful to see how original everything is - usually they get "messed with" and/or damaged
the communication with the original owner is a HUGE plus
Zeus yet had their frame production line going at this 1977 epoch. by '83 it had closed and all the Zeus badged cycles were assembled with frames contract supplied by Razesa.

BTW, the bottom bracket came out without too much effort.
The bolts for the shifters and bb cable guide are bent. If anyone has a suggestion on where to source replacements, I would be happy to hear.

A little progress. Cleaned up the hardware and a little polish on the pedals and crank arms. I probably could have sanded the cranks before polish, but the procrastinator in me put the kibosh on that..
Going to order a couple of decals this week, as well as cables and pads. I'll assume that campag brake pads will work?

Progress hasn't changed much. A little more polishing, and assembly of the driveside crank.
Thomas had an assignment in his 8th grade Language arts class recently, 'interview an object'. I saw it online this weekend, as it was graded. He probably won't be happy that I'm sharing it, but I think it's good stuff.

Thomas found a few more pieces to the puzzle, under the tree yesterday. A set of decals from Velocals is the most needed item, to get the project back on track.
For the record, this will be my first attempt at replacing decals on a bike. I am fairly certain it's not rocket science, but I'm all ears for any tips from those of you with a few decal jobs under your belt.
After decals are done,, the Zeus should start taking shape pretty quickly.
Thomas also received a pair of American Classic tires. The sidewall is darker than I'd hoped for, but we'll give them a shot anyway.

Well, as bertinjim mentioned above, The instructions for the decals are pretty good. I did follow them, and I'm fairly satisfied with the results. Our intention was to just replace the two decals on the seat tube. However, the new sticker kinda make the rest of em look a bit ragged and faded.
Getting the old adhesive off was the biggest chore. Anyhow, here's a before, and a couple after pictures.

It's been a little bit since we last worked on the Zeus. A thirteen year old kid has a pretty busy schedule.
Thomas installed the headset and bottom bracket tonight. I helped out a little, but he handled the bulk of it.

It's been a little while since a solid update. Last night we 'burned the midnight oil' and got it built up to a rideable bicycle.
We mounted tires, installed derailleurs, shifters, cables/guides/clamps, and adjusted some stuff. Here's where we are at.

Update
When we got it all together, Thomas spent some a little time riding up and down the driveway(about 200' long). I wanted him to work on shifting with the dt levers in a 'safe' environment.
Well, since we installed a new chain, it didn't jive well and skipped in a few gears). So we benched it for a few days. I found another freewheel in the basement that had the same 26t low sprocket. We put it on, and all is good again.
So the other night we drove to a nearby neighborhood, where they have wide shoulders, bike lanes, and little traffic. He spent a couple of hours getting familiar with the Zeus. Initially, I was pretty much over-cautious. But Thomas quickly put that to rest. He's really pretty comfortable with dt shifting.
He immediately noted that it feels slower than his other road bike, and doesn't stop as well. However he is comfortable on it. Next stop. Clips and steaps..straps...
Couple notes
*I have found and ordered a 36t 119bcd chainring to replace the 40t
*Does anyone know if the rear derailleur can handle bigger than a 26t freewheel?
