Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is convoluted, but I think my number is 35. Sad.

Eddington number. Looks like I'm at 34 for the year, but 50 for all of Strava time, which goes back to 2014 for me.

Some people are treating this as some kind of failing on the part of the vaccine, like it would be better to get the disease than to be vaccinated because then you'd be more protected from getting the disease. It's like people forget that the point is NOT TO GET THE DISEASE!!!!, because it's already killed 650,000 Americans and is currently killing 1500 a day - the equivalent of two towns the size of the one I grew up in, all dead in a day.

Yes, you don't get that 'extra' protection with the vaccine, but also, you don't die.

Star Trek premiered on this day in 1966. I was a young, impressionable lad of 8, and I was hooked!

No, the Salt Monster. The green slave girl was the first pilot, which was incorporated into a 2-part episode in the first season and set 15 years earlier. The studio, or maybe the network, thought it was too cerebral and asked for something more action-packed, so they shot a SECOND pilot, this time with Kirk as Captain instead of Chris Pike and Spock as First Officer instead of Majel Barrett's 'Number One', because the same clowns didn't like the idea of a female First Officer.

And somewhere between the pilot episodes and the series itself, the uniform for women changed from a cowl-necked top and black trousers to the minidress and high boots.

I love Star Trek (watched it as reruns as I was born in 1965), and although it was visionary for its time, watching it in 2021 does show it has not aged perfectly. Still a great show, of course.

For a while a few years back, I was really fascinated by past visions of the future. Mostly they're way off, because what people do is to extrapolate from where they are, and fail to consider disruptive new technologies or popular reactions against current trends. So, in the 1930s, people imagined a future with ginormous steam locomotives. Then the diesel-electric locomotive came along. In the 50s, people imagined that food would be replaced by pills with all the nutrition. Then people got tired of ever-more-tasteless food and cooking exotic foods became popular.

And everyone, in every era, expected flying cars. Nobody seemed to realize that would mean all the problems of street traffic, but in 3 dimensions.

Ohh - I didn't notice the yearly number in the chart. Looks like I'm currently at 37 and I've been around 40 each of the four previous years, so par for the course.

1. Nope. Mind you I pretty much only did the football games involving my kids' school since I could only attend one per Friday night. And, I knew most of the refs, and virtually the players and coaches from our school. The coaches loved having me there since I supplied them some really nice pictures for their offices and the year end banquets. Don't forget, we live in a fairly small community, and are pretty involved in school/community things, so are pretty well known. It wasn't like some stranger was mulling around the sidelines.

2. Not particularly, but high school ball is not nearly as sophisticated as college or pros. There are typically one or two really good running backs and one or two good receivers on a team, so it wasn't hard to learn a team's play patterns. Add to that some really fast camera equipment designed for sports. It wasn't like shooting with a cell phone.

My eddington number is 62. Now, what do I do with that? Anything?

Thought so.

Been to a bunch of crawfish and shrimp boils, crab bakes, fish fries, etc., but never a fish boil. Doesn't sound too good. Maybe reason enough to continue to avoid Wisconsin.

  • You need 2 more days (of 90 miles or more) to achieve an Eddington number of 90
  • You need 43 more days (of 100 miles or more) to achieve an Eddington number of 100
I knew I should have done that extra 2 miles.......
