Racing Bik / Kestrel / Aegis

Some of you may have seen my Racing Bik from the workshops of Didier Louis. The same design was also badged Kestrel and Aegis, although I've never worked out which was the chicken and which the egg.

Here's an oddity though... Decathlon branded version. Not as wide spread as the assortment of ALAN frames around, but sure surprised me!

Hi Milo,
Thar looks like an Aegis to me, but I bow to your knowledge. I thought the Aegis had curved seat tube like the Decathlon you show. I see Kestrels as having dimples or part straight/part curved seat tubes. The first Aegis looked more elegant, but the Kestrel 4000 Looked engineered for speed.
That's why I keep my eyes open for an Aegis frame, beautiful lines. And I'm not fast, unless I'm going downhill or have a motor. Didn't Basso put their name on some Aegis frames?
Best Regards, Eric

60 years ago I was living in Brest. I was 1 1/2

I'm fairly confident there hasn't been a Kestrel made using that frame.
There might be a couple of design elements similar to what Kestrel did with stay tube geometry and head tube aerodynamics from the late 80s through early 00s, but that's about it.
Until proven otherwise with pics, that is.

Aegis predates Kestrel, maybe not in production, Kestrel was former Aegis people.
Aegis character traits are the binder bolt placement, curved seat tube, aero stays and fork legs.

Kestrels were laid up differently. While the 4000 was their aero roadie at the time, their Airfoil dispensed with the seat tube and went 650c to beat that.

Aegis Frankenbuild...

I said I was looking out for an Aegis... Now I have one. I think. No ID on frame, and heavily repainted. On the "Are you searching" thread, there were some guesses, but in person, it seems most likely to be an Aegis Aro Svelte, though I'm not sure if the year can be narrowed down. ID plate seems to be missing. No matter.

This is planned to be a fancy modified Frankenbike, so bike pedigree is not too important. (I didn't feel right bast***izing my 200Sci though it's far from mint).Good looks, as such however, are important, so I'm going to have to see about what I can do regarding refinishing the frame.

Another project...

Thanks to Rocket-Sauce for a second time!

I have scored 2 bikes from his postings, while up on Cape Cod.

Cheers, Eric

Stripped, with Campy Sirroco and Hed CX for comparison.

The Sirroco wheels are sold, I was just about to de-list them to save for the Aegis, but gave an interested ebayer a single chance yes or no, at the full offer, and he took it. Rats! (Sort of... I do need to fund my habit.) I guess the Hed wheels I bought from a BF member last year will get a chance. Pre-1985 wheels look silly on it.

Aegis did contract work for Basso and Trek when they were getting into CF. The give away for Aegis is the pinch binder bolt.
The Trek version predated OCLV and was labeled as a 5000.
Different paths, Aegis did the contract work and regretted it, while Kestrel quickly went off shore and had short term success.
