Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Went out for 3 hours this morning, got scared by some drivers. Some days are like that, like they had a meeting last night with all the drivers deciding to drive crazy.
Anyway, got home ok and a realtor was showing the crap house to a family of 6. How 6 people could live in that thing is beyond me. (first world problem).

I have a new respect for those of you who can (still) ride hills. I was never a good climber, but I could do it. I can't anymore. I spent an inordinate amount of time in the smallest ring. Back to the flatlands for me.

I had another "Oh, My God!! I LOVE this bike!!!" experiences, this time with the Schwinn Circuit. I felt like I'd been neglecting it, and I'd gone to the trouble of getting a 22t and a 26t cog, to make the gearing a little easier for my old legs. So I took it out for a 65 mile ride, and WOW, it was great!!! Not just a pretty face! Between the steel frame and the VIttoria Corsa tires, the ride was comfy but it never felt too mushy or flexy. The SIS gears work great, even on a Uniglide cassette. I think rotating the Biopace chainrings really makes the difference.

This is the 22" frame I dithered over, not sure I could make it fit me, since I usually ride 58 or 59 (23-23 1/2"). But with a longer seatpost and a 130mm stem, the length is good. The bar is a good 2cm lower than most of my other bikes, but with a Soma Highway One bar, I can still use the drops for riding into the wind. Surprisingly comfortable! And I was afraid I'd have to get a Nitto Technomic stem.

I downloaded 117km of the women's road race earlier and I'm about to sit down and watch it. I only caught the final 15km or so this morning.

Stupid crit at 4:30. Of course, that means I miss the Early Bird Special at Denny's. I guess it was worth it though, because I hit the podium in third again. Baby steps. The Grand Slam will have to wait.

I might be able to do it again, somewhere further on down the road. I lost all of last year to a series of injuries, and find myself seriously lacking in fitness, since my last visit to hill country in 2019. I'm also two years older, in an age group where that matters.
