shoulder length has gotta be pretty important - you got 59 then plus 10 and 10 to account for the bearing shell width - thats 79mm - the reason why this must be an accurate length is so those circlips can slot in

Yes, if the shoulders were too narrow the bearing would go too deep into the shell, and if too wide you would not be able to install the snap rings. Just don't ruin the one you have.

Any bearing supply house would have these. the bearing number is right on the old ones. Looks like 6003 RU

To press or drive in the new bearings you only want to press on the outer race. A socket, pipe, or whatever fits best will work.

i'm not getting a new spindle - current spindle looks fine - the discussion was more about how difficult it is to find the proper length spindle
and i'll be honest bob - dude - you dont seem like you ever have positive things to say when you post - just gotta call em like i see em for ya

I've worked in the bicycle industry for 30 years, and your Nuclear weapons bearing Navy before that.
and I'm smart enough to stay away from New Jersey.
spindles and crank designs need be considered in combination.
you didn't seem so smart when you started needing help. but now you are an expert.

thanks lester - the job did not turn out as hard as the 'research' was - i mean - if not for a couple of encouraging folks on this forum i dont think i would have attempted - let alone successfully completed - the bb work - i prob would have ended up at one of the LBS - which woulda been a shame - i like my LBSs (i have 3 i use around me) but as you might expect - most folks i talked to had little (or no) info / experience with this BB - i think they woulda got the job done for me eventually but it was more satisfying (and cheaper) to do myself - just cost me some bearings and my only tool up was pliers for the circlip snap rings
thanks for the comments on the rockhopper - love that bike - got it for $25
overall i would say i am a fan of the rigids - i like the workout and ride much better than my experience with my full suspension FSR which has already moved on
i dont think i have given suspension bikes a fair shake but like i said my early feedback is positive for the rigids (plus i dig there understated asthetic)
