Your Ride Reports - May 2022

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Ride Reports - May 2022

If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, we welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, we welcome you, too.

This thread is for anyone who rides a bicycle ... or unicycle, tricycle, tandem, etc.

Are you an experienced road cyclist? Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? Do you ride weekends? Do you spin at home or in the gym? Is Zwift your thing? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Touring? Audax/Randonneuring?
Or are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid?

There are no set challenges - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group.

Just pick the target that you would like to achieve this month and post updates throughout the month as you work toward your target. We love seeing photos of your rides and hearing all about them.

Share your accomplishments with us.

Thanks for the thread.
May biking is off to a great start as I rode each day so far. My routes radiate from Kingwood TX to surrounding areas. You can read about my rides at Texbiker.net and see video clips on my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/RickAnkrum

It has been a quiet month for bike riding. I did one after work ride for 27 miles during the 1st week of May. I was on vacation in the mountains for a week were I did some nice walks in the woods. Since I got back I got another evening ride in last Monday for 27 miles and went out this weekend for 2 rides. Both were my Picnic to Davis Is. route for 40 miles each. It starting to feel like summer already. Blah.

Last two weekends, took my 11-year old along with me on my usual jaunt through Westchester. She tagged along for 42 miles the first weekend and 48.5 miles this Saturday. We averaged 13mph the first ride and 14 on the second one. I hope to get her to 50 miles @ 15.5mph by the end of summer, and then get her onto her own road bike next season. Want her to get comfy riding on the road.

Did a 40-miler with some climbing. The route track reminds me of Bart Simpson.

The PNW had a record cold rainy spring and there's only so much indoor riding on my rollers that I'm willing to do. May has been a better month, a 5 Sunday month and Sunday has been my group ride day for the last 25 years. My wife and I have been able to get out on our tandem for the first 4 Sundays. This is the first month this year that I've been able to do 12 hour weeks - a 4-hour ride, a 4 hour hike in the hills, and 4 hours of moderate on the rollers - approximately. It's going to rain this last Sunday so I'll have to do a long mid-week ride when it's not raining to get my 12. Bummer, because the group usually celebrates the last Sunday in May with a mountain pass ride. Won't be any fun in 50° and raining. My wife and I gradually worked up to 56 miles and 2800' over the month and were looking forward to that pass ride. We did get a lot stronger over the month though and are looking forward to June. Maybe the weather will be better? Being able to hike the day after our hard group ride has really made a difference.

Good holiday weekend for bike riding in the Ocala Nat Forest. Saturday did a mix of paved and non paved roads for 43 miles. Sunday also got in some non paved sections for 40 miles total. Monday I was pooped out from the rough stuff so stayed on the tarmac for 36 miles. Saw lots of wildlife including deer, wild turkeys and a bear.
Truthful signs.

MY longest ride to date was about 70km round trip, to a picturesque gorge. My body handled it fine, by the end my aluminium frame had developed a host of jingle jangles. Instigated my search for, and recent procurement of, a top of the range late 80s steel frame. Picked up a serious sun burn in payment for thinking a late winter ride couldn't possibly burn me. Was very happy to enjoy zero bumsore thanks to bike shorts. Once my new bike is fully figured out and running smoothly I'll take it on a 130km round trip around a dam reservoir in the mountains of eastern Aichi prefecture.

My club did a ride from a brewpub at the Millville NJ airport, followed by a barbecue lunch. I chose a vintage steed.
