Yeah and people would also have to be pretty naïve not to see that His comments... (about the shame of wearing shorts as being one of the main reasons why the majority of people drive)...is just a figment of His imagination.

I said nothing about any majority of anyone, or any main reasons. I said this ad wouldn't target a sense of shame at not wearing pants unless the makers estimated that it would resonate with a large segment of people.

You know there's one subforum too many when those traveling by limo, private jet and superyacht are LCF.

The same thing as speculation about what secret desires might motivate people who do drive cars.

Nobody claims the riders in the TdF are car-free, but that clip does make a good point - scenes like that crash happen every day on normal streets, so you've posted a good example of why we need protected bike facilities and car-free zones. Thanks!

Referring to the "amazing number of people desperate enough to avoid being seen in shorts that they'll invest the majority of their (unsaved) life savings in driving" implies that the poster has some knowledge of some number of people who actually are desperate enough to avoid being seen in shorts that they'll invest the majority of their (unsaved) life savings in driving. I claim "Shenanigans!" as well as to any cuddly supporters who cannot tell (or care about) the difference between fact and fiction.

Next thing you know, the LCF list might see a message about the automotivist conspiracy placing wiretaps on LCF posters due to the conspirators' fear of the so-called Living Car Free Movement threat to the World Order with no evidence available or considered necessary; and some other LCF poster will offer unqualified support and try to explain away the nonsense.

I'm so disappointed you didn't put "wiretaps" in quotes. When you post fake news about bizarre conspiracy theories, you're supposed to do that, so you can later claim that's not what you meant.

If I should begin to post fake news about bizarre conspiracy theories it will look like this:
It's amazing how many people are desperate enough to avoid being seen in shorts that they'll invest the majority of their (unsaved) life savings in driving. Oh, the shame of exposed knees!

I don't know how many people drive for fear of wearing shorts. Could be a pp.

How many people drive to avoid messing up their makeup though?

Do you think the word, 'majority' in "majority of their life savings" has anything to do with any 'majority' of people anywhere? These are two totally different uses of the word, "majority?" One refers to the size of a sub-population relative to a larger population, while the other has to do with a quantity of money relative to another quantity of money.

Men don't wear makeup, so your comment only applies to women... But I don't believe that the fear of messing up their make up is the real reason why most women don't ride bicycles to work. The real reason is because most women are wives and moms and a have a ton of responsibilities which would make bike commuting or LCF very impractical or even impossible for them.

This whole discussion about whether, who, or how many people avoid biking because of shame to not wear pants is moot because that's what the ad in the OP was playing on. If the ad-makers didn't expect to strike a chord of shame for not wearing pants, the ad wouldn't have made sense and they wouldn't have made it.
How many people drive to avoid messing up their makeup though?
How many people drive because they feel handsome in a car?

And yet if there was a trend to soccer-mom car-free (SMCF), lots more would try and succeed.

It's all a matter of how you decide to invest your time, energy, talent and resources.

If, for example, you want to become a stronger Ironman competitor, you may drive your car to work after spending hours per week at a gym with a pool.

Someone once told me that her parents taught her to make sure she ALWAYS looked professional no matter where she was, so that if she encountered anyone who was part of her professional network, she would convey the same professional appearance as she did while at the office.

That means avoid running into people in public, at the store, etc. in ways that would tarnish your image in their eyes. This involves a huge investment of time, energy, talent, and resources/planning. It may involve never ever EVER being seen in shorts, except maybe while at a gym working out. If that means driving a car everywhere and avoiding going outside in pants, people will make the effort because, after all, what else is the economy except looking/acting professional and getting paid for it?
