I just gotta gush
Been fine tuning my bike recently and have been pleased with how well it rides. Went on a ride with my buddy today on some hills. While he generally smokes me on the uphill (my issue not the equipment), I was able to stay way ahead of him coasting downhill (my equipment not me. we both have similar skills at taking windy roads). At the end of the ride he said something to the effect of, "I couldn't keep up and I was pedaling the whole way. That is a fine machine"

It’s a great thing to have your bike all dialed in just right, isn’t it?
I hate it when there’s a noisy drivetrain, wonky bar wrap, loose bearings, or anything out of sorts. But get everything in tune and adjusted to fit you… Nirvana!

It’s most likely not the bike.

Nope. The difference in rolling resistance from a dirty cheap set of hub bearings compared to a clean high-quality set is relatively trivial.
Since you can’t climb with your friend but you can coast faster than him on the descents, I would guess that your combined mass (you plus your bike) is heavier than his, and hence gravity is doing the work for you… and/or that you achieve a more aerodynamic position, and/or that your jersey is tighter and is more aerodynamic, etc.
It’s most likely not the bike.

I hate to say it, but an increase in downhill coasting speed is likely due to weight gain.
