Why Do Rich People Love Endurance Sports?

"May the wind be always at your back."
It would indeed be a blessing if it were so.
Perhaps after almost finishing your century when you are completely drained of energy,
the wind suddenly changes and is in your back. Wow! how rich can one get.

I'll call myself an upper-middle-class white guy. The only endurance sports I participate in are bicycle riding (not racing) and long-term financial investing. I'll just say both have been 'productive' for me.

Many years ago after being released from the US Navy I was not wealthy, in fact I was homeless and gathered food from trash cans. I did work, but didn't make much money standing on my feet 10-12 hours a day, yet I rode my bike to work every day year round, and that requires a lot of craziness in Michigan.
I was the only person to ride a bike to work in the number of factory jobs I had. I was also one of the few that did not party, smoke or piss money away on foolish things.
My father raised 7 kids on his lone income and we were taught to save. He also taught us how to invest and spend wisely. I see myself as being responsible with resources. 1000 bucks for a wheel set is foolish from where I sit and so is 30 grand for a new car. Never owned a new car.. The cars I drive are purchased at the 8 or 9 year mark and are base models enough to get the job done.
As a young man I learned to strive, to push forward, to give it more than the next guy as it makes a difference. I suspect most "wealthy" people have this kind of mindset about them in everything they do.

What really wealthy people do for "Sport": Buy an NFL Team and pay the gifted to play the "game" for them.
"The Carolina Panthers are about to be off the market with David Tepper’s purchase expected to become official in short order. The Panthers owner set a new market value for NFL franchises at $2.2 billion. Obviously each market is different, but the Panthers were ranked 21st in the NFL in Forbes team valuations. That means more than half the league should sell for over that amount."

Plus, get the local tax payers (excuse me, tourist tax dollars - hotel/rent cars) to pay for the stadium. Then, those same tax payers have to pay again to go into that stadium on game day.

I’m a yuppies worse nightmare a Redneck with high end bikes I love endurance sports and I work my arse off with ranch manual labor chores aka digging post holes and actually shoveling dirt and all blue collar trades aka plumbing to electrical. And yes I have a white collar degree from UTSA aka UT south of Austin the point being yes I realize that cycling is oriented to higher income due to the expenses but once you buy a good bike all you have to burn is calories!

"Why Do Rich People Love Endurance Sports?"
I suspect for many of the same reasons that other segments of the population love endurance sports.

I've heard it said by pundits, as have I thought, that the people who spout platitudes that money isn't everything are often rich and well known enough that people would bother listening to what they say..."I don't care too much for money...Money can't buy me love."
Nonetheless, good health is invaluable, especially with age...

I suspect that only an insignificant portion of the bicycling demographic, regardless of wealth, ever use the term "wheel sets" to describe bicycle wheels, let alone purchase $1000 versions.

Cool, I was trying not to generalize. I have a dentist friend (I'm not his patient), who is also a DIY cyclist and motorcyclist. But my dentist and oral surgeon are tri freaks.

I would rather use the word successful rather than "Rich".
I think one of the biggest reasons is that successful people usually have a higher level of education and/or understanding of issues that relate to their well being. They probably didn't get where they are by ignoring things that have substantial correlation to living a better, healthier, more balanced life.

I would rather use the word superior rather than "Rich".
Superior people are simply better at everything than inferior people. The only question we should have is whether they are inferior because they are poor, or are they poor because they are inferior?

I always thought that things like golf, polo, sailing, horse riding are a rich men's sport, while cycling and other endurance events are poor men's sport.

Having done jobs that required a lot of physical work (carpentry, building, geology and archaeology field work) and many that have not (teaching, lab work, data work), I can definitely say that I was far more motivated and able to go biking or running after 8 hours of the latter than the former.

Found a pattern watching the previous Olympic Trials races from Hayward field U of Oregon,
for spots on the US Women's team ..
Girls running distance events were white , sprints and hurdles, shorter, power, races,
the competitors were Women of Color ..

As Chris Rock once quipped: "Oprah is rich. Bill Gates is wealthy. If Bill Gates woke up tomorrow with Oprah's money, he'd jump out of a window...."

Like all the rich
Cycling, running, and obstacle course racing are dominated by white-collar workers.
