Can I take a ring off an 11spd cassette to use with 10spd shifters?

I am sorry if this has been answered on this forum and I just don’t see it. I have a Space Horse that came with 40-622 tires and an 11-32 10spd cassette, but there are going to be times when I want to ride with smaller tires. I have a spare set of wheels set up with an 11-32 cassette, but it is an 11spd cassette...Can I simply take a ring off the 11spd cassette and use the spacer behind the 32t ring?

No, not unless you want to deal with all the other problems you might face.

For one, the cogs on the rear are spaced differently and your indexed shifters won't match up well. But I suppose you might be lucky and for some reason it works well enough for you.

There are other reasons too.

Just get the correct stuff. Otherwise you are experimenting. If you like experimenting and have money to risk if it goes wrong, then go for it.

Thank You. I have always gotten the correct cassette, but thought I would ask...

Taking a cog off an 11 speed cassette doesn't magically make it a 10 speed cassette.

Not much point in having an un-useable one is there?

You might be able to add spacers to match the 10sp spacing, but just buying a 10sp cassette would be a lot easier. It'll fit on the 11sp wheel but may need a single spacer on the spoke side.
