Best mag trainer

What’s the best mag trainer for road bikes that’s not stupidly expensive?

Depends on A) what your priorities are, and B) what you consider "stupidly expensive."

Do you need smart abilities? Wheel on or direct drive?

In a plain ol' mag or fluid trainer, it's hard to beat CycleOps. They're really durable and the company has a good reputation for customer support.

And they can often be found cheap in good used condition because folks lose interest after a year, or upgraded to pricey smart trainers.

But for Zwift, etc.? Nah, probably not. I mostly use my old CycleOps trainer for long, easy base "miles" training in bad weather, warmups and cooldowns before/after outdoor rides. Occasionally I'll do intervals or long periods of standing to pedal, while watching my heart rate. Mostly I watch movies or binge TV shows while doing Zone 1/2 sessions. A "dumb" trainer is good 'nuff for that.

I"ve been using a Wahoo Kickr SNAP for 4 years now, I think they are now $500. That is a wheel-on, smart (WiFi/Bluetooth connectable to be able to do things like Zwift or Rouvy, etc.) I think you can find other brands closer to $400.

I tried a dumb trainer for years, just too boring - watching TV or videos just didn't do it for me. With Zwift, there is enough variety of rides, races, group rides, workouts, group workouts, etc that I actually get way more decent training mileage in that I ever did before. But, you do have to pay a monthly subscription fee for most of the online services.
