With that said, it is mostly fine for anything up to vo2.

Whenever my Direto kicks the bucket I will be opting for one that has a heavier flywheel - but I honestly do like it a lot and recommend it without hesitation.
I've been looking at the Direto XR-T (looks like you can get it from the German sites for a touch over $600 shipped). I'm a bit nervous about how everyone says the road feel is worse but the resistance and slope specs seem similar to the Kickr or Neo2T (though the accuracy is slightly less and it lacks the autocalibration). I like the idea of the Rizer, but dislike that you can't lock out the steering and also seriously dislike the price.

My understanding is the newer variations of the Direto have noticeably better road feel than the one I have. $600 seems like a really good deal.

One other thing to keep in mind - Direto is noisier than Kickr/Neo/H3. I don't particularly care - I can watch movies without needing subtitles - but if you're in an apartment building it is something to consider.

Thanks, definitely something to consider. I'm in a basement and use earbuds for music/video and push to talk for Discord during races, but it could be an issue. I ride on Sportcrafters rollers with progressive reistance (and a fork stand) which are pretty quiet (enough so that I can hear my waxed chain even when it's freshly waxed), so I don't really have a level of reference to compare it to.

Kind of late to the trainer discussion, but I've had a gen1 Hammer since 2017 and it's been great. I got it largely because of the flywheel and it was well reviewed. Have not been disappointed. It is loud, probably, but so are my fans and I use earbuds on the trainer.

Finished week 1 of base 2, pretty much the same kind of structure as base 1, doing longer endurance Tues and Sun (this past week 2.5 and 3 hrs respectively, increasing each by 15mins each week), Wed 90mins z2, Fri 60min z2, and Thurs and Sat sweet spot using TR adaptive training. I'm at 8.4 for sweet spot, so basically doing 4x20s. The SSB2 HV plan I got served from TR has a lot of level 9 stuff for this week, and honestly I don't think I'd be able to handle so much sweet spot, and I can do a lot of sweet spot. I'm sure the adaptive training would scale me back somehow, but I'm liking my current endurance/sweet spot hybrid plan.

TMonk I used the Zwift FTP test workout for mine. It flips to resistance mode for the test, so you get to control the power but aren't at the mercy of the road. I always pick a route like Alpe du Zwift so it feels like I'm climbing when I do it and I get the best of both worlds.
What range cassette do you run on the Neo?

I got in 17 hours last week, which is the most I've done in a week in about 2 years. And on Sunday, I was able to do 20min at ftp sitting at -24tsb the day after a 3200kj ride. While I do not pay much attention to the PMC at this point, being able to do that is a good sign for me.

I have at least a few months of down time to play with, and I am hopeful I will be able to use it to build through to the racing season.

2 hours with the 3.3 w/kg bot on Zwift on Sat, 4 hours of pure endurance on Sunday by keeping HR under 125. Today was 20 min @ threshold followed by a 17 min VO2+ pyramid followed by 10min @ tempo + 1min @ 140%.

Gym workout today. Finally wrote strength into my annual plan, so it's not a "when I feel like it" thing this year.

you flexin' on me bro?

for reals though, that last workout sounds killer. Also 2 hours w the Bowie bot sounds like it could get challenging. What course?

I'm starting to feel some infrastructure in my legs now that I'm deep into base2. My legs felt great at the end of my 5.5 hr ride on NYE and again doing some climbing the following morning. Feeling like I can motor along at z2/3 all day. I think its time to do some intervals soon and bring the power up. Next block.

I'm a bit conflicted since I started a month later and I dont know if I want to build more base or do race prep for VoS in February. It's really the TT that matters so I can do some longer intervals and ride the TT bike and keep up some volume. But my fitness won't be tip top either. Not sure what to do TBH. So much is in the air right now with drama/politics surrounding my club's race team (TBD at a 1/6 meeting) and the omicron variant running rampant. I guess we'll see how this all works out.

The bot course was Out and Back Again. I really like the bots when I'm just trying to get some long solid endurance work in. Keeps me from being stupid. I started Sunday with the 2.5 bot, but at about 2:45 my HR started getting a bit sensitive and the mini surges made it hard to keep under 125 so I dropped finished up on my own. My goal is to do 4 hours with that bot and keep my HR under 125.

That last workout has become my coach's favorite this season. He threw it in at the beginning of the block and I crashed and burned because it was the first time I'd done VO2 for the season. The beginning of the workout varies. This time we did 20' @ threshold, last time we did 2x18' @ SS with 5' end in-between. You then ride easy endurance for 5/10' depending and then the work starts. 1' @ 130-140%, 1' end, 2' @115-125%, 1' end, 3' @115-125%, 1' end, 3' @115-125%, 1' end, 2' @115-125%, 1' end, 1' @ 140-150%, 1' end. Then 10' @ 80-90%, 1' @ 135-145%.

I wondered that as well and thought end must mean endurance.

VOS is like the least punchy course ever. IMO you are prob fine focusing on longer intervals for the TT and keeping volume high.

Yes, 1' recovery @ endurance pace. Sometimes we go low end endurance zone and sometimes higher end of the zone.

I think I may copy your workout within the next few weeks ntnyln. Seems like a good way to build up lactate buffering and overall work capacity.

Fiesta TTT this AM. Beautiful, cool low wind day on the island. The condition of the road was okay but has a couple of problem spots due to rain and dirt.

As the local guys know, there is a Fiesta Island Time Trial on Sunday and of course, we will be gone - skiing. Oh well.

You mentioning doing 20 minutes of FTP day after the big KJ ride made me think of some power stuff posted on another forum, I think it was call TurboLane, or something... Anyway, one thing that one of the coaches looked at, that was really interesting to me was, how much power can be done after X amount of work. I think he called it 'tired 20'. Idea would be to track workouts where the athlete did at least 2500 KJs and then finished with a 20 minute effort.

I usually think about the intervals I'm doing and the overall TSS or KJs, but I think this year I'll focus more on when the efforts are in the ride.

Ya, doing power like that after some KJs "in the bank" is good too since its race specific. Once or twice a season I'll do a workout where I bookend high z4 20' intervals around a race pace group ride, and hammer the ride. The "on" portion of the ride is only about 90 minutes, but man, that last 20' interval is real tough.

Tempo TT bike at lunch outdoors. Just power, no HR.

My little loop with a hill says the new bar setup and fit might be quick. Prior PR on that loop was in October on a really really ideal weather day with high humidity and 70deg outdoors. Today was cool, and very dry, and dense air. Aeroweenie calculator said today was a 0.195 versus the other day a 0.215. The warm day I would have worn the one piece San Remo. Today I had the flappy long sleeve cool weather jersey.

We'll see. Need to fab a new Notio bracket for the newer setup.

One of my fav workouts is 1x20 -> 50-60min tempo -> 1x20. The last 20min feels like death. It is glorious.

I admire your patience/persistence with your TT setup. I keep telling myself I will take the time to dial my position in and then never do...
