This is the ultimate winter commuter setup
For those who commute long distances (20+ miles) in the cold and snow over varied terrain, I've found what I consider the best commuting setup having tried countless different options, clothing and bikes over the years.
- Lightweight fat bike with 5" Terrene Johnny 5 studded and tubeless
- Planet bike Blaze 800 - lasts a long time!
- 45 north bibs, pants and coat.
- Icebreaker base and midlayer(s)
- Neoprene face mask
- Windproof hat
- Abom heated goggles (these never ice up)
- Specialized pogies that bolt to the handlebar and have internal pockets for hand warmers
- Lobster claws for use inside pogies
The above works in virtually all conditions with no worries. My commute consists of snow, rutted ice tracks from cars, sheer ice, deep brown sugar and all in between. I've found the fat bike the most comfortable in all conditions (low psi absorbs a lot of ice rut punishment) and maybe just a few minutes slower over 20 miles as compared to a big mountain bike tire.
YMMV, but not by a lot.
