Thanks very much. Are you going to clear coat the surface later? Oxidation is the concern I have. I know, it can be maintained if you are diligent...
Yes: it's the same sort of plating as Caswell's Reprochrome kit.

Oxidation is no problem. NiCo is close to what is called a 'superalloy' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superalloy). These are used in the high-pressure turbines of modern jet engines and can withstand superheated oxygen where stainless steel would simply disintegrate. The only concern here is if the NiCo plate adheres to the steel properly and doesn't flake off. I'll keep a close eye on it for the next few months of riding.

Thanks! I'll continue to improve my plating technique and post any improvements. It's quite rewarding to do this and can save you money if you have a lot of items to plate.

Hi @realsteel is there any way to restore the pictures from the broken links? This is fascinating but I can't see any of them!
Cheers
Milo

Hi Milo,

I'll be posting a new electroplating thread in a few months with updated methods including copper strike plating.

In the meantime, you can use the Photobucket embed fix plugin: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...-embedded-fix/

Cheers,
J.

Thanks so much for that tip!

Excellent write up on plating. Love the work. I'll try that after I perfect clear high gloss home anodizing, which will happen soon after I finish my son's car, then the suspension on mine, then remodel the bathroom (after I finish the kitchen)....

This is a great reference that deserves to be in some sort of "Hall of Fame" .. So I'll at least bump it back up with a question.

I've got a couple bikes that I'd like to touch up the chrome on. From reading this post it looks like "spot" repairs are possible with NiCo plating.

What I'm wondering is if doing a brushed on copper plate over the bare steel first will give better results?

Very cool. Great write-up.

I've actually been researching diy electro-anodizing titanium that uses a similar process. Hopefully this will inspire me to get around to trying it.
