Front Wheel stolen off my FX2 bike

Well now I got worry about replacing a stolen front wheel off my hybrid FX2 bike. I was at a gas station went inside briefly when I got out I noticed my the front wheel was missing off my bike.

I love this bike too ticks me off. I was thinking of upgrading tires anyway... hopefully replacing a whole front wheel wont cost me a fortune?

Suckage

I recently replaced my quick release skewers with ones that require a simple allen wrench.

Stupid to have to do so but might reduce by 1% the chance of what you just experienced.

Sort of like these better anyway. Cleaner looking not having the quick release handle and actually a little quicker to install, don't have to trial and error the quick release tension. I never go anywhere without a mutlitool.

It's a target of opportunity, just about the easiest part to steal if it's not locked.

I have a habit from when I was a kid and the theft problems were a lot worse of locking the front wheel and the frame to whatever I'm locking it to and sometimes not bothering to lock the rear wheel. The rear wheel is clearly more valuable, but I've never seen one stolen because it involves just a bit too much mechanical effort for the average moronic opportunist thief. Unlocked front wheels used to get stolen a lot, on the other hand.

I use a hex skewer bolt and a hexlox. Although it's expensive and easily defeated if you think about it (I can think of 3 ways in under 15 seconds), the typical person who's never seen the hexlox before won't know what it is.

You have to look at the bright side. At least they didn't steal the entire bike or vandalize what they left behind.

You experience is why many bicyclists remove and lock their front wheel to the rest of the bike.

Cheers

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise. The bike has caused you a lot of worry, from coasting to over inflated tires to whatever. Could be a sign you should sell or donate what's left and enjoy some peace.

You can buy a general wheel for fairly cheap. Thieves know general brand names like shimano so ideally take the branding off the wheels so they look more generic. You could own a nicer, more expensive wheel, but to the casual thief look for branding how will they know.

Were you riding the bike, or was it attached to your vehicle?

Someone who needs a single wheel? Someone who wants to sell it for scrap? As to the latter, we have “junk men” who cruise the neighborhood the night before, and the morning of, trash day. I’ve seen banged up wheels in their trucks.

I got another wheel ordered. Thank goodness I got a backup Schwinn Mountain Bike that has been very reliable past few years. I will just ride that while I wait for the wheel to come in. It has great tires that do great on off road trails, I will just ride more the off road trails I been wanting to for the next few weeks.

This is when you realize how great it is to own multiple bikes in case something goes wrong with one, especially when bikes are selling out of stores like hotcakes and they are selling them more for a premium.

Lol no that is just my personality. I actually love my bike a lot and tend to keep it for another 5 - 10 years even if I get another bike in next few years I'm still keeping the Tek Hybrid I love it.... I am that way with everything. It drives my wife absolutely nuts. I drive some people batty including my wife because I kinda act that way with everything I do. I get really nit picky about my morning coffee, my breakfast, my clothes, everything

Yeah it happened when I was in the Joliet, IL area. A lot of nice bike riding there including I & M channel, but high crime rate area too unfortunately.

It kind of makes me wonder if it might have been loose in the forks and maybe just fell out while he was driving. Assuming of course it was the kind of bike carrier where the bike hangs from the frame.

Did the gas station have a security camera?

Be thankful it was a single wheel and not the entire bike which is more costly with your bike. Been there, had that happened to me.

A few years a go some guy who was riding west to east across Canada had his bicycle and all his gear stolen in Montreal. I never heard how he managed after that.

Cheers
