Radio / Communication?
I was looking into getting a walkie-talkie, or a two-way radio if you prefer to call it that.
Do you know what sort of radios messengers use? I feel like they'd have some pretty decent ones with long range and long-lasting batteries.
I plan to use my walkie-talkie for group rides with friends but mainly for snowboarding. It's easy to get separated on the mountain with all the novice riders and delays, as well as obvious skill differences. I can't be holding hands with my buddy at breakneck speed.
I could use it for mall errands as well (I live in Vancouver. Metrotown, one of the biggest malls in NA is a 10 min drive away. It's huge.) though maybe not.... on account of looking too retro.
My ideal range would be 5 km~ (ACTUAL range, accounting for buildings / traffic)
[What's the deal with all the GMRS and all that jazz frequency stuff? Someone explain to me please!]
Battery life of 3~5+ hours (With PPT every 10 min or so, no extended conversations)
Portable size, better if it can fit in a semi-loose jacket pocket.
It'd be pretty sick if I could plug on accessories like a throat mic (again, snowboarding. Masks are on) or even an earpiece.
Throw out some suggestions!

generally when they say 35 mile range they mean signal is strong enough to go mountain top to mountain top. if there's so much as a tree branch in the way, or a power plant, or anything, that number goes way down. if you want to go five miles i'd get a radio rated for much, much, much more.

Agreed on the Motorola FRS or Talkabouts(if those still exist). Never had a problem with them within the confines of a campground sized area.

Motorla, sprint, and nextel push to talk phones are the messenger standards. They all work just fine. Way better than the old days of a pocket full of change and a beeper.

I always used Boost Mobile because you can get them prepaid and not have an extra cell phone bill every month. Used up to ~15 miles away with no problems.
