Bobcats are fine. Mountain lions scare the hell out of me because of how fast they are and what they are capable of.

Meanwhile, this fat dog could not have cared less about the people hiking and biking along this road...

I have a Manx. He just showed up when I lived in the hills 11 years ago. People dump animals in that area but he was the first one who wanted to live with us. He was quite the hunter back then and there was plenty of prey in those hills. He insisted on staying outside while we were at work and we would come home to the results of his hunting. He's pretty old now and I hate the thought of losing him.

I've seen mountain lions twice on mountain bike rides, both times in the Kagel Canyon area. One was at Dexter Park and I first thought it was the biggest coyote I'd ever seen. It was about 150 feet away and completely ignored me. I turned around and got out of there.

The other time I was up the canyon near those cemeteries. There is a deep gorge and I went to look over the edge and there was a mountain lion at the bottom, might have been the same one I saw at the park. Anyway, that time the lion made eye contact with me and I backed away from the edge and sprinted down the road.

Is that bear on the road below Brown Mt?

I once came home from work to find a cougar on my front porch. I grabbed my friend Mr. Weatherby from my office and we went out to look for the cougar, but we never got a trace of it once we got into the woods.

This is my friend Mr. Gilbert. Since I came home from the hospital a week and a half ago he has been my constant companion.

Mr. Sullivan is over on the other side of the recliner, out of camera range.

Both of them have the same habit that their predecessors had of dropping mice in the bath tub. That way they can beat them senseless, then give them a chance to recover a bit, then beat them senseless again... until the little vermin remain unresponsive. Such good kitties...

Yeah. Black beans rarely want anything to do with you unless you have food or they are sick.

In 2017 I encountered at huge one while leaving a campground in NW Pennsylvania during a bike tour. The thing was easily 600 lbs. He had recently raided the dumpsters. We looked at each other from about 30’. I didn’t do anything threatening, so he just ambled off into the brush.

Note to self: Kagel Canyon has big kitties.

Yes. That pic was taken on the paved road behind JPL, before the split that goes to Brown Mtn Rd.

When I look at this photo I imagine the cat thinking "Hmmmmn? How can I get my revenge?"

Awe. My very first cat was a primarily black tuxedo cat. Black cats always have a special place in my heart.

This is certainly an unusual thread on BF. It has actually remained civil. Amazing what furry kitties can do to soothe us savage beasts.

No arguments about:

Breeds of cats.
Canned vs. dry food.
Whether males or females make better pets.
Indoor vs. outdoor.

Coming across a big cat while cycling has to be hell. I know how cats are whenever you're trying to walk across the house-- insisting on going in front of you, very slowly. I can only imagine how they are when you're trying to bike down the road...
