BTW, if anyone wants to geek out on cantilever adjustment, this is the place: https://www.chapmancycles.com/cantilevers/

The PDF linked to there will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about cantilever brakes and then some, but if the tool works in your browser it's a fantastic way to visualize the effect of changes to the setup.

I like the Dia Compe canto pads too. They are plenty strong and cheap.

I prefer cantilevers to sidepulls.

Definitely shorter than the 800 and 900 series lines.

Those tires must be funk ride, I've never seen that tread.
So what Trek bike is this then? It has no number so I was thinking closer to a 900? The tires are no name and were cheap but will suit the purposes of the owner to have a spare bike for visitors. I'll tell them not to ride in the rain

Like I said, cantilevers stop well. I hate single pivot side pulls. I tolerate cantilevers when the situation calls for them. I love dual pivots.

Based on the catalogues on retrobike.co.uk, it looks like perhaps a '96 970 or something similar.
