I need a new rear wheel. I just get around town any more so don't need a great wheel; some jerks bent mine up (A Sun CR-18 I built) while I was at the gym this morning, so I don't want to spend a lot of money. REI has 2 that fit (700c, 28mm tires). The EVO looks better, but I can't find a manufacturer or reviews (only 1 at Amazon). A search turned up only 2 vendors. Anybody know anything about it?

EVO is the house brand of Cycles Lambert, also known as HLC, one of Canada’s larger bike parts distributors.
What you are looking at is a very basic entry level wheel built with generic parts.
I sold loads of wheels like it from Lambert when I had the bike shop.
Always a good idea to check the spoke tension and stress relieve it before putting it to use.

Assuming you have a decent/good quality hub, why not just get another CR-18 rim and use your existing hub & spokes?
I would get new nipples if yours aren't smooth turning.

Thanks. I noticed that both the vendors are Canadian. That tip let me find the manufacturer thus this wheel's specs: https://www.hlc.bike/ca/Catalog/Item/041821-03-700 It has better spokes (mine aren't stainless) and nipples (better builders, too), but the rim is only single-wall. My front wheel was ruined when a motorist drove into me a couple of years ago. I bought a cheap new wheel from REI ($45!) that's been okay; it was from Canada, too - what's up with cheap wheels from Canada?

Because I'm depressed and don't feel up to it. The hub is a Shimano FH-T610 I installed in 2014, with spokes that are even older. I haven't bought a new spoke in > 20 years.

Just glancing quickly at the links, but for the EVO links, I see no specs. So what's the OLD (drop out spacing or Over Locknut Dimension) of that hub and is it even a 700C (622mm BSD) rim. As well it looks like it's intended for a freewheel and not a free hub as the REI link is for.

Yeah most people don’t realize that we are on a line of latitude south of the northern border of California.

Well . . . not quite. But close.

Google Maps says CA-OR border is 42 degrees N. It says Oakville ON is at about 43.45 degrees N.

But you're definitely farther south than Eugene, OR (about 44 degrees N).

The source I am looking at says the California Oregon line is 43.8 something.

If that's from the "distancesfrom" website, well, I wouldn't trust it.

I saw that one too (with query for "oregon california border") - then I looked at the map available on their website where they indicated the latitude was 43.80+ degrees N. The map showed the location to be just a bit south and east of Eugene, OR, if I recall correctly.

Bottom line: it was way off. Eugene OR is about 150mi north of the CA/OR border.

If you instead query that same site for "california oregon border", you get 37.78+ degrees N for the latitude. That location on their map is some distance due east of Fresno, CA.

What that site appears to be doing is only using the first word in the search string (the first state name listed) and giving you the lat/long they have as a placeholder for the state. Might be the geometric centroid; dunno what they're using to determine it.

Wikipedia and other sources I've seen all give 42 degrees N as the latitude of the CA/OR border. The "distancesfrom" website is the only one I saw that gives 43.8x degrees N - or 36.7x, degrees N, depending on how the query is worded.

The 45th parallel is a little north of Eugene. Most Oregon highways have signs posted for it. (The 38th is somewhere close to the Bay Area. The sailing rag, 38th North, is published in Tiberon or Sausalito as I recall.)

No argument there. More of Canada than many folks realize is well south of 49 degrees. That includes nearly all of the Gaspe Peninsula and Newfoundland south of Gander and Corner Brook (both of which surprised me when I looked at the map in more detail).

Many don't realize it, but pretty much all of the US/Canada border east of the Mississippi River (e.g., everything east of the western Lake Superior/49th parallel junction) is south of 49 degrees - including the northernmost point of Maine in Aroostook County, just across Kelly Rapids from Pohenegamook, Quebec. Some of that northern border is well south of 49 degrees.

And FWIW, what appear to be the southernmost points in Ontario (Pt Pelee National Park and Pelee Island near Windsor) do in fact seem to be south of 42 degrees latitude.

Not giving you a hard time. I've found geography and maps fascinating since an early age.

Thanks. I was down in the dumps because vandals had bent my wheel. I recovered my confidence, bought another CR-18, built a wheel today. I hope it works.
