Shimano Brake Calipers - End cap on cable?

I've swapped out the factory fitted Tektro brakes for Shimano on a couple of bikes now and have noticed on each that on the Tektro brake calipers the outer brake cable has a metal end cap where it enters the brake cable adjustment nut. This cable with end cap will not fit into the equivalent Shimano brake cable adjustment nut. So, basically, is it required or not?

No, the end ferrule is not required and won't fit into Shimano caliper brake adjusters. You trim the brake housing to length, preferably file the end flat, and it then fits directly into the barrel adjuster.

Thanks mate - much appreciated. Just makes me curious why there is an end cap on the Tektro calipers.

I also have a pair of Tektro R539 caliper brakes and they do indeed require metal ferrules on the brake housing ends. I guess Tektro just made the opening in the adjusting barrel a bit bigger. Why? No idea but both methods work just fine.

If you’re fussy about having ferrules on your cable ends, a couple of companys make step down ones that fit into the Shimano brake caliper sockets.
Some are even color coordinated.
