Well just for giggles I thought I’d post my findings… backstory … a purchased a pair of Trek, Treks, Trekii, hmmm a while ago, mainly for the smaller bike, it has been re-commissioned and is ready to go it’s in fantastic shape, however the larger frame did not fare so well, I saw pretty early that it had bubbly paint on the bottom of the chain stays… also it had one of those bolt on stands which has made a mess of the paint and well I tried too show the results in the attached pictures..

Any thoughts? I don’t mind a little rust prevention but I have plenty of bikes… so I don’t need this frame but the running gear is going to be used on a Trek 500 that needs it.

there is a small dimple likely caused by over tightening of that stupid bike stand on the right chainstay non- drive side…… anyone know if that dimple will compromise the chainstay?

I don't see any issues with the frame. On sections like this, I like to brush paint on Rustoleum rusty metal primer before the color coat.

That looks like a good candidate for sandblasting to bare metal followed by powdercoating. A 614 is a nice frame, well worth restoring.

yes they are great bikes I’ll likely offer it as a frame set as a 650b candidate after I get done stripping it … i have a lovely blue Trek 500 that I will use most of these parts on…

I have 5 frames ahead of it so I’ll likely never get to it…

Looks like you caught it in time and it was just mostly surface rust.
Was there a folding side stand mounted on this bike? Asking cause it looks like a stand clamp might have caused most of the paint damage right behind the BB.

FWIW: My Trek 614 had the Ishiwata fork, which was considered by some to be badly designed and prone to failure, especially when rust was involved.

Yes i like the blue and although its 501 and not 531 for teh type of riding i do it will be fine...I got that 500 frame in anticipation of this red frame being more than i wanted to take on, its not a huge amount of work to de-rust and paint, but i liked the blue frame and i will transfer everything over and it will look period correct, i believe the Blue 500 is a 1983, the Red 614 is from 1982, but i measured the stays and they appear to be the same length, also the bottom bracket appears at least superficially to have the same outside measurement on the frame BB itself, so i think the triple front chainset will work also, the brake reach is the next issue, will the 27 inch wheels and brakes work, we shall see.

The blue 500 is absolutely an '83. Made sometime in spring I think by the serial number? I think I had figured that out. Plenty of spacing for big tires with 700C. I had long reach tectros ready for it had I decided to sell locally. Those remain ready for another project.

chrome on that dark blue looks great.

all the chrome has cleaned up with minimal effort.

The Triple spins nicely and doesn't impact the chain stay hopefully the chain will do the same.

I am glad it found a great home! It was such a pretty blue color. Looks different in your lighting...somehow deeper.

And I definitely didn’t send those foam grips!!!

Might still have the Sun Tour ARX derailleurs from it...probably the wheels and crankset too. Who knows!

Let us see the finished product when you get done with it!

The Suntour Cyclone mk II of the 613 should do well, and its all a matched set, that where the foamy bars came from, however i'm unsure whther of the black label Rigida rims will take my not inconsiderable weight of 210 LBS and that's not "Local Bike Store'... i got a 720 and a 937 waiting in the wings and just completed my wife's 613.. what the heck am i doing...

I had a Trek 614 for about a week, and got rid because the paint job was a horror show, like that one. Really brittle, and corrosion happening in various places (I think the bike had been used as an indoor trainer -- lotsa sweat and no wind). The damage in your first photo is from an over-tightened kick stand, I'll bet.

Yes, this bike had an aftermarket kickstand installed and it was over-tightened and that had damaged the paint.
